'60s as in, Chuck Berry, Beach Boys,The Animals, The Who,Stones,Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, Byrds, Righteous Bros, Lightnin Hopkins, Howlin Wolf.....etc.etc.?
and a great many guitarists of that era used as many tones as they had songs.......

I'd change to thread title to "Les Paul AND Strat for 60s vibe tone !!"

Yes, you are right about changing the title. The 60s vibe tone I was referring was for the psychedelic genre heavy in guitar, hendrix, jefferson airplane, cream, fleetwood mac with peter green, yard birds, free and so on.

It really depends on what style of music you're playing, but since both guitar completely dominated the '60s I saw go with both.

A few bands from that time perid:

Ten Years Afer (ES335)
Humble Pie (Les Paul I believe)
Rolling Stones (Various Guitars)
Cream (Various guitars namely Les Pauls)

The guitar is a very small part of the equation as well. Do you want to go with a Marshall, Fender, Supro, or Sunn amp? How many analog effects pedals will you need? In case of Hendrix, you'll need at least a wah, octavia, uni-vibe, and fuzz face. Have fun, the battle is never-ending.
