Standard tremelo is supposed to only bend down, you can't pull up. Floating you can pull up and down. The older Fender synchronized tremelo's were of the standard type, the 6 screws prevented you from pulling it up.

Whoa! That is NOT right at all. The Tremolo system that Leo Fender invented was intended to "float." That means that the bridge is NOT set up to lay flat against body, and as such was intended to be able to pull up (raise pitch) and press down (lower pitch). The six screws should not prevent you from pulling up --- when they are adjusted properly!

Consult the current manual that comes with new Fender guitars:

http://www.fender.com/support/manuals/pdfs/instr_owners/FenderGuitarsAndBasses2003.pdf

You will see what the "factory standard" floating trem is.

orvilleowner,
I stand corrected on the old synchronized tremelo's not being floating, but still the diference between a floating and a non floating tremelo is a non floating can only bend down.
