An acquaintence that knows I'm into guitars showed me his guitar today. He opened the case in the back seat of his car. I didn't get to take it out but it has me puzzled. I'm going to try to get the serial number from him, because he doesn't seem to know what he bought. It was new when he got it. Still has plastic on the PG. It's a sunburst finish with maple fret board. It has all single coils, Two Volume knobs and Two Tone controls. The tone knobs are smaller than the volume knobs. He says it takes a battery but it runs down very quick and he doen't put it in much. Also it has a chrome Fender logo on the headstock. I looked through the catalog and didn't see anything that has four control knobs. He said he paid $1,900 US for it. Any idea what it might be? Maybe an older model that sat around for a few years?

You stated that the guitar was new (still had plastic on the pickguard). Whatever it is, it's not a Fender, not from the standard lineup, or from the Custom Shop (if it were some kind of custom I'll guarantee you it would cost a LOT more than what your friend said that he paid!). Heck, you can browse through Fender's current catalog and you won't find a thing that matches what you describe, and especially the four control knobs and the chrome logo on the headstock.

Looks like what your friend bought is some kind of copy. That's not necessarily bad, in and of itself, if it's a good-sounding and playing guitar, but it don't sound like any Fender guitar I've ever seen.

The thought just hit me that it IS possible that somebody took a new Strat and modded it with the four controls, then sold it to your friend. You didn't mention where he bought it and a picture would be very helpful.

Looked exactly like that. Funny thing is I don't think he has any idea what it is and doubt he was looking for that kind of guitar.

I did some checking online. I going to refrain from telling him he overpaid for it. I'll bet the salesmen were doing high fives when he left.

Fender needs to bring back the VG execpt with no batteries so every time u plug in the blue light comes on. i used to have a VG and i used to play it in tele mode with open G tuning and practice Honky Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stones. loved the tone and maple fretboard. i wanted to keep it but due to bills had to sell it well at least i got myself 3 strats 1 is a copy and 2 are fenders. i also have a acoustic guitar too. i attached VG knobs and a pickup to it so i can make my own VG guitar.
