The materiel covering my pickguard is starting to peel off. Can I just peel it all off. Or is it something important?

it's a plastic covering that they put on the pickguard to protect it during shipping, but now that you have it, it's ok to take off

If you want to get it all off, you'll need to remove the pickup cover screws, the pickup mounting screws, and the pots and knobs!

I know of a much better and cheaper way to do this that would save Fender some big bucks and at the same time, enhance the purchase/ownership experience.

All the strats I've ever bought have had the sticky celophane under all the screws on the pickguard and under the nuts that mount the pots.

I know you gotta get that stuff off, or else it will weld itself to the pickguard surface over time. At least that's what I hear.

At the very least, the stickers will leave funny "tan lines" when the covering finally gets removed.

Not only will it leave "tan lines", but if you dont take it off the when it starts to peel you will get dirt and grime that collects behind and settles on the little bits of adhesive. When you do finally take it off you will find you have all kinds of dirt stuck to your pickguard. Cleaning it is not that easy either.

I would just remove it so it can age evenly on its own.

Bottom line - Don't be a Mini Pearl and leave the plastic on your pickguard!

You don't need to take every screw off to take off the plastic clean.

Pull off the knobs w/ two spoons or shoe lace method.

Then start peeling the plastic off. As you get to a screw, loosen the screw. The plastic should pull off under the screw, when the plastic is past, the screw, re-tighten.

When you get to a pickup screw, pull the plastic tight, then loosen the screw slowly. Keep count of the number of turns. The plastic should slip out from under the screw. Re-tighten the pickup screw the same amount of turns.

When you get to a vol pot, loosen the nut. Once again the plastic should slip out from under the nut.

When you get under the strings, cut the big bunch of plastic with a pair of scissors, then pass the plastic under the string.

Should go pretty quick.

I remember when I had to do that to mine. Everything had to come off, that junk was stuck pretty good. Longer you leave it, the better it holds. I estimated my guitar hung in the store for close to a year before I finally bought it. Plenty of time for the plastic to adhere itself to the gaurd.
