I just picked up the July issue of "Guitar World" and read an interview with Brian Setzer. He said what turned him to rockabilly was when he heard Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps' "Be-Bop-A-Lula" for the first time. In particular, he was most impressed with Gene Vincent's guitar player Cliff Gallop. According to the article, Gallop was with Vincent for only two records. I went to YouTube to hear hear some of the earliest Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps (with Cliff Gallop). Wow! How come I never hear his name mentioned amoung the great early rock guitar players?

Anyway, I came across this video of Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps (dig the vintage equipment- except it wasn't vintage then, lol!). It appears to be from the 50's (one poster said 1958) and it must have been shortly after Gallop left. In reading the posts, there seems to be some confusion as to who the strat player is. Does anyone know who this is... I really like this guy!

If you scroll down the commentaries on that link you'll find the name Johnny Meeks. He was Gallup's successor, though I can't identify him visually. Gallup was Jeff Beck's inspiration and the motivation for Jeff to record his CD 'Crazy Legs' for which he searched for vintage Gretsch Duo Jet guitars among the other original gear he employed for those sessions. During those days, I remember the publicity photos for the Blue Caps, displaying white Fender gear, not unlike the Beach Boys of several years later. I don't think Galluip was among them. One of my guitar buddies from those days, with whom I had lunch last Sunday, still owns his '59 Duo Jet, and a P-Bass of that vintage as well.

Yep, you're right... Johnny Meeks! I found a couple of things on YouTube- there's not much on Meeks.

Thanks for your help!

Yes indeed, and if you read JB's book titled "Crazy Fingers" you'll see some great pics and stories of above referenced.

As a kid in the late 50s/early60s, I well remember my mom putting a stack of 45s on the record player and Be Bop A Lula was one of my favorites.
At night we heard some of the LPs,The Platters were and still are a favorite from those days...it's funny,I've been hearing "Twilight Time" in my head a lot lately.

Been struck in the head with a platter? Suggest pet scan of your brain to see if there's anything spinning around in there.

Been struck in the head with a platter? Suffering daytime sleepyness perhaps. Suggest pet scan of your brain to see if there's anything spinning around in there.
