A couple months ago I switched to a Rickenbacker 330/6.

Well... guess what?

The novelty wore off and I'm back to a Stratocaster.

I got a brand new American Deluxe HSS in Sunset Metalic with a maple neck.

The guy at Sam Ash let me trade the Rickenbacker as a return with a restocking fee, even though it was 60+ days since I got the Rickenbacker, and it wound up being an even trade for the American Deluxe HSS. I was expecting to get half of what I paid for the Rickenbacker and see if I could do an even trade for an American Standard, so it was a very pleasant surprise to get the Deluxe.

Things I did not like about the Rickenbacker...

Harder to play
smaller nut width
not enough tones
have to take a cover off to adjust the truss rods
have to change the strings one at a time because they hold the bridge and tail piece on

Other than that it was a great guitar.

Anyway, I'm back to Strat, and This American Deluxe HSS is just awesome. It has the roller nut and the "passing lane" switch.

Plus... I miss all you guys and gals...:)

A Rick 360 is in my future, possibly blue burst. But I agree it probably wouldn't make a good one and only. I expect the Rick will be similar to play to my Guild, I just love the way they look.
You sure lucked out at Sam Ash. I've been noticing lately that they seem to be going out of their way to give good service.

I am with the other posts. I have never owned a Ricky, but have come close a few times. One thing I have been told is they are rather bright sounding. Is this what you found out owning one? And I could see how being locked into a narrow tonal range might get old pretty fast, if that be the case. You have given me something to think about!

The reason Rickenbackers are so bright it because their bodies are made out of maple, as their necks.

Someone told me it had to do with the unique pickups used by Rickenbacker that created this brightness. But these are for sure "bright" then and I guess i will not be buying one soon. I would just end up selling. Speaking of brightness, I did just pick up an odd Gibson that is called a 77 RD Custom. It has a Moog board in it that make the guitar very bright. Love the guitar BTW.

haha, I have a 75 RD Artist, a higher end model of the custom, and it pissses me off, it only has active elctronics, so as soon as the battery goes out, no sound at all.. poorly designed.

Ya the Artist is nice looking guitar IMHO, and the battery issue does not bother me so much. The Custom does not have the compression/expander like the Artist, rather an active mode with a bright switch. I wonder what happens to my Clapton Strat when the battery dies? I have never let it go all the way.

Unless it is only active electronics, like the RD's, the pickups will still work. The sound will sound weaker though. I have a G&L L.2000 bass with active/passive pickups, and when the battery goes out, the output drops. But I like it more than the RD because you can still play even though the battery is dead.

For those of you that might be reading this thread and are asking, What in the world is a RD Custom or an RD Artist, here is a pict of my RD Custom. These were the most limited version of the RD series, an came with a Maple fret board. Also they are a longer scaled guitar (25½" as opposed to the more usual 24¾") and Moog active circuitry. Ok, I know this is a Fender Forum but sometimes we slip in a few other items:
