im trying to decide on my next purchase......
heres my situation, a while back i traded my les paul dc and some cash for a hr 57 strat
which ive not regretted at all. i had it for sale anyway, and it was never my go to guitar,
it never had a place.
so now i have a srv strat, classic players 60s, hr 57 strat, and the am std strat with texas specials and a hot rails bridge pickup (on the chopping block) for sale.
now i would like to get either a les paul traditional pro (the one with coil spiltting),
or an fender ec strat that i played and absolutely loved the tone.

Ooooh, now you're talking.

I want something similar. I want to Claptonize my Hotrod and buy a LP.

I own both and I never play the Les Paul. My Clapton Strat does it all.

i must have played the clapton for at least an hour, once i figured out how to use the midboost, i was in business..
i plugged into a the drri and the midboost drove the amp really nicely.
with the midboost at zero, still sounded like a clean strat, but had way more bottom end
than the the vintage noiseless on the deluxe players strat, i did an a&b comparison.
to my ears the midboost at 7 or 8 sounded gibsonesque quality.
thick tone, and sustained awesome.
then i plugged in to a marshall jvm 410 100 watt, 4x12, i thought i died and went to heaven....

so in my rationalization, the clapton is still cheaper, an upgrade from the std strat,
and the guitar is awesome. 1600 usd moreless, on sale at some places too.

then there is the gibson traditional pro honeyburst with split coil capabitlity,
classic 57 in the neck and a burstbucker 3 in the bridge.
the guitar sounded great, position 1,2,3 were really usable.
the split coil function made them sound like very thin single coils, but overdriven
thickened up quite a bit. but at 2000 grand usd

You haven't told us what you're looking to get out of it.

General consensus is that the EC Strat can't do humbucker stuff. P90s, yes. My EC Strat is my favorite guitar and I use the midboost to approximate humbucker stuff but only for leads. If you are doing complex chordwork or rhythm stuff, the midboost can really muddy things up.

Bottom line: I think the EC is Fender's best production line guitar hands down and has a wealth of tones at your disposal. BUT, if the music you want to play on it was primarily played on a Les Paul, go for the Les Paul. Just IMO.

you have a good point. "if heartaches were nickles" joe bonamassa primarily played it on a ec strat, now he plays it on a les paul, i cant really say i like 1 more than the other.
Leslie West played it on a humbucker equipped guitar, be it, not a les paul, tone was awesome.
however, i would like to play stuff like zepellin and peter green, gary moore kinda stuff.

good thing i still have time to test both out and really feel them out.

nevin, ive seen some on ebay for like 2800 usd.
i would love a reissue, but with gibsons imo a standard would be all you would need...
traditional pro just adds a couple of more options.

Clapton Strat all the way. Don't get me wrong I really like Les Pauls, but I just think the Clapton is more versatile, and more guitar for your money.

Clapton Strat Hands Down! You say your les paul was never your go to guitar...so sounds like you are already leaning towards the EC Strat...if all you need is our push to get you over that cliff...consider yourself pushed!

By the way, my EC Strat is my desert island guitar...now if they would only make it in two color sunburst...

T2

and one little last push...

you have enough strats already. you can take one of them and do the mid-boost mod.
get the LP

I like Strats because they sound like Strats. I also like Les Pauls because they sound like Les Pauls. If I were in your shoes, I'd keep one of the nicer Strats and get a decent Les Paul.

I got good mileage getting the Pete Green sound on a strat. Put a SCN in the middle position of a Clapton guitar. A VN in the neck. Now both of those pickups are permanently out of phase to each other. I, after spending hours swapping wires around, can only surmise it's due to magnet polarity.
So put the guitar in the neck/mid position. Turn the volume to 6. Turn the midboost up to 8, turn the tone down to 1 and you're getting near Greenieland.

Closest I've heard to that sound out of anything.

Though come July and a very fortunate meeting, I'll be dedicating my playing to The Green Manalishi on a LP. I'll be trying the magnet flip mod too.

A jamming buddy of mine paid close to 3 grand for a '09 L.P. and has had nothing but trouble with it since-especially with regard to tuning. When I bought my L.P. Trad. Pro I opted for the Epiphone-I didn't even consider the Gibson for a second- and for just over $500 I got a tone that nails the PAF tone dead on plus has the option of coil split that the Gibson has.The best L.P. I've ever played was an Epi 1959 reissue-for sound, finish and playability it was the most sublime Les Paul I ever had my hands on and it was just a tad over $1,000.

All that being said I think that the Clapton would be the better choice ...or...for a lot less than either you could buy one of the aforementioned Epis and a Jimmie Vaughn Strat and have 2 killer guitars for a lower price.

i own one of each. can't go wrong with either one.if you go with the l.p. get one with burstbucker 1 and 2 in it. e.c. strat can do it all but nothing beats a l.p. through a marshall.never try to convence me other wise.

I used to think that nothing beat a Les Paul through a Marshall too....that is until I played my Guild S-100 NB through my Marshalls. My buddy who owns several Les Pauls absolutely loves the snarling crunch that the S-100 gives even more than his beloved Les Pauls. I'm sure that he'd swap 2 of his favourites for my Guild.Listen to some of Kim Thayil of Soundgarden's lead breaks played through a Marshall sans effects and you'll hear the difference too.

The custom shop reissues have several things going for them over the standard USA series. The main thing is quality of materials and construction.

-No weight relief in the bodies (unless you want a chambered reissue) and the weights are still around 8.5 pounds or less on most guitars. '59 reissues are usually slightly lighter. I have seen sub 7.5 pound Lesters.....

-Real maple tops, no veneer jobs and full thickness. Quality wood. I have never seen an ugly plain top or flame top.

-Quality rosewood fingerboard. Most are nice and dark. Beautiful stuff.

-Long neck tenon and various other vintage construction features. Binding, heel depth, top carve, truss rod, wiring, capacitors etc.

-Better finishes period. Great looking bursts.

I could go on and on. 2010 and newer have a few extra upgrades that are worth it IMO over the previous years. You have to compare these guitars alongside USA standards to really appreciate the differences. For a little bit extra money, it is a no brainer.

I have a lot of guitars, and of all the "new" guitars that I own, this is my best one by far.
