Wow! I guess I've not seen enough Japanese copies ... that kind of see-through routing is a new one for me ...

Only the ones from the early 70s are like that. The ones from the late 70s and 80s are much more accurate as the first lawsuit guitars were made from catalog photos of the guitars where the Japanese studied their dimensions from photos. Later on they actually got their hands on examples and copied every minor detail.
