Is there anyway an original color can be traced by serial number from 1987/88. Fender reckon their records don’t go back as far.

I've seen records at Fender that track ser. nos. back to the 60s, however they only supply year of manufacture.

I don't think the S/N is going to give it to you unless Fender can tell you from their records. If you have the original paperwork or know the FULL model number you can get it.

I just went through this with my axe but it's newer. There is a two digit color code after the model number. e.g. my axe is 010-1102-838

The 010-1102 tells that its a Fat Strat (HSS) with a Maple neck
The 838 shows that it was a Crimson Trans (it's now graffiti yellow) color with a deluxe case (the first number of the 3 number series indicates the type of case that was sold with the guitar - 3=gigbag, 7=std, 8=deluxe, etc.)

Is there any way you could track down the previous owners?

Are you suspicious that you don't have the right body or that it was refinished at some point?

Thanks for the replies. I think it has been resprayed, there is some overspray in neck pocket, part onto the tilt mechanism, has anyone seen Fender do this before? Everything else, including hardware and neck are genuine 88 Strat Plus. If it is a respray it is a lovely job, probably Candy Apple Red, but I have seen Fenders where this varies in shade. Unfortunately I don’t have the previous owners details, I know it was a local (Newcastle, England) gigging guitar. Superb guitar, I wouldn’t change it, just the curiosity factor kicking in. I will try to get a pic on the site, I haven’t tried it before. 8)
