Hi guys,

I've had my Fender Mexican Strat now for nearly 10 years and was just in the process of selling it on when I noticed a slight problem with it.

The body is in fantastic condition and plays beautifully. However, on the neck, I have a problem with the Fender Logo.

What appears has happened is that the laminate covering the logo has cracked and come loose, taking some of the logo detail with it. I'm not sure what I can possibly do about this though? I equally am not sure what has caused this, and if there is anything I can do to resolve the problem at all?

I've got a photo of this problem - if anyone is interested and can help?

Many thanks,

Chris

Unless you can convince an authorized Fender repair shop that the logo needs to be replaced, there is not much you do. Trying to repair or replace it with and unlicensed/illegal copy will only raise questions and cause problems. As long as everything else about the guitar is in order it is best left alone.

Thanks for the answers! The only problem is that I have actually sold the guitar on, and it would appear that part of the reason for it being bought by the person in the end was because he wanted a genuine "Fender", and it doesn't quite fit the bill right now!

As a result, I've just lost a significant amount of money on it - I'm wondering if there is anything that can be done therefore to stop the laquer from peeling away?

I'm taking it to a professional authorised repair shop tomorrow and will get a second opinion, I think!

Obviously, don't really want to go into the world of copywrite and illegal logos.

Cheers,
Chris

There is zero question of legality here.

The logo that came on your guitar is comming off and you want a new one.

There are a million manufacturers of water-slide decals out there. Find one. Order the Fender logo for your year/type and slap it on. Problem solved.

That is pure BS. Those logos are unlicensed, illegal copies of a Fender trademark. Doing as you suggest will guarantee that questions will be raised when the guitar changes hands. You are totally clueless regarding the legal issues at hand.

Hi Chris.

Firstly don't panic, all is well and can be sorted out with as minimum of fuss as possible.
You're going about doing it in correct manner, taking the guitar to a Authorized Fender Service Center.

What they will do is take some pictures of the guitar and the affected area. Send those off to Fender. Who will verify the guitar and supply the repair center with a replacement logo that they will want to charge you to fit.

Details here

Best of luck.

I have a hard time imagining that a mexican strat and a significant amount of money would ever have anything to do with each other.

I presently have a 97 mexican 100% stock stratocaster on craigslist for something way less than a significant amount. So, the above statement isn't being made without some credibility.

While the logo may be cracked and peeling, it is still the original and should not deduct from the value any more than any other type of scratch. Most people looking for original Fenders feel any refinishing/repairs deminish the originality and value. If you sell for less because of this your cheating yourself and he's pulling one over on you. knock of a few bucks maybe but nothing more.

Sounds to me like the buyer's intent was to lower the ask price by any ridiculous excuse.
Aging of the finish and the Fender logo being one of them.

I suspect that the cost of redoing the logo will give two results..

(1) Cost of repair, refinish which you will not be able to recoup from the sale.

(2) A new logo which doesn't match the normal wear and tear look of the overall guitar and even though it may be genuine will raise questions of doubt with other sellers because of that disparity or relicing the area and logo to match is not cost effective.

My standpoint with the buyer would be that this is the sell price and the guitar is as is since it is ten years old.
I would find another buyer and nullify the sale.
Anyone who would want me to lower the price because of this issue would be politely shown the doorway...Absurd.. :!: :!:
