I've bought pickups from Jason Lollar @ Lollar pickups, also Lindy Fralin, and Van Zandt.
of those, the Lollars would be my first choice, followed by the Van Zandts...just personal choice.
All of those makers have websites.

The Fralins are good, the Blues Special set I think, just liked the others better, the set is in a '57 RI Strat that my son gigs with...he said it's not coming back. :D
He's got it made, plays music all the time and with lots of my guitars and amps....hey,I can't play them all...and that's what they're made for.
The VanZandts are in a '59 RI Thin Skin Strat from Wildwood, and the Lollars are in my '62 RI Hot Rod Strat.

I wonder what sort of pickups I would need to buy if I like the sound of the regular am. std. pickups but want to get rid of the humming/hissing from radio-interference. Now I play mostly in position 2 with the neck and middle pickup. Sounds great, but I would like to use the neck pickup alone sometimes.

You should look into the Vintage Noisless pickups by Fender,I had some and they were quiet, but I didn't care for the sound.

I have purchased a couple of sets of pickups from Klein and Dimarzio. The Dimarzio's (Area 58 and 61) were very nice and while their sound was not what I was going for, others who heard them loved them. I have purchased as set of S-5's and Jazzy Cats from Klein and honestly, they will not be my last sets that I purchase through Chris Klein. Great craftsmanship, communication, and tone. I cannot recommended him enough.

Thanks, I will look into all of these. Does anyone here have hand-on experience with the Suhr noise-cancelling backplate-system?

I found it easier to put up with the noise than tolerate the sound of Vintage Noiseless pickups. SCN's however seem ideally suited to me.
Lot's of options out there for noiseless pickups. Lace, Dimarzio, EMG.
That said instead of wasting money on the Suhr backplate, just pull the polepieces out of a old pickup and wire it between the switch and the volume pot lug. Exactly the same thing.
I think the Suhr is wired on the negative side of the pickup wiring in a bid to stop it altering the sound of the pickups. If so wire a regular dummycoil between the black wires of the pickups and the back of the volume pot. I however am highly skeptical about the claims of it not altering the pickups sound.

There saved you £170 and saved a old pickup from being binned.

Hey there, before you bought the pickups, did the maker of the pickup asked you whether what material you wanted, the colour of the cover pickups and the DC Resistance etc? Something like that? I want to know so that i will know how to handle bfore buying one set of pickups on my own.

I use Mad House Designs, the owner/winders name is Rayne. He wants to know everything I can tell him from materials in the construction of the guitar to rig setup and style of tone I am looking for. He uses many different materials depending on how vintage or modern you want to go. I am extremely happy with all pups so far as is anyone I know of who has used him. I have a set of pretty hot nickle covered pups on the way now for a blacktop project I'm working on, can't wait to hear em. Good luck and if interested I can provide contact info, the website will be going with soundclips soon but right now there are just some YouTube vids out there to see, but you have to consider the sources on those, lol.

No,I just went to the websites and looked over the different sets they had,but there are different options on some of them...I don't know enough about the materials and winding of pickups to tell somebody how to make them, that's what they do for a living and they're good at it.
Just listen to some of the sound samples and pick what you want.
As far as your statement about people who build different pickups like Les Paul and others and not having confidence in them well, you shouldn't worry about that.
If you think a maker should just stay with Strat pickups to be good, then you don't understand what it's all about.
You've gotten good advice so far,the rest is up to you now.
