The cover on my tremolo will only stay in place when the guitar is strung. The string tension holds it in place.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to fit a bridge cover on a vintage style tremolo plate? The only way I can see is to modify the bridge cover itself (file?). I just wanted to do it for looks on one of my guitars.

Going waaaay back, it was always more comfortable for my hand to not have the bridge cover in place and I personally prefer the look of the guitar without it. That the guitars generally lack them may be reflective of a consensus with that opinion. However, I'd hate to seek that gorgeous gold cover wind up as someone's 'ashtray'.
