hi all,

I have looked on the fender website, but cannot find what an FSR is. I tried one next to an MIM standard in my local shop, and the only difference i can see is the neck, which is more like my 72's neck-thicker and c shaped. But what does FSR mean, are there any other differences to an MIM standard, and is there any significance(like being limited edition?)to it over an MIM standard.

Hi tele

The abbreviation FSR means factory special run. As far as i know some shops especially in the states commission a limited no of certain guitars. Others may be able to tell you more about FSR guitars.

cheers Al

Al is right...F.S.R. = Factory Special Run.
Available in limited supplies....sometimes to specific dealerships like Guitar World.
Below you will see an example of a Fender F.S.R. Highway One Stratocaster HSS that I own that was 'unofficially' called the "None More Black" (Spinal Tap reference) Stratocaster.
I have since replace the pickguard with a nice tortoise shell one.
Notice the LARGE C.B.S. headstock with the spaghetti logo, (a special feature....that's what sold me!) a feature not commonly found elsewhere.

Correct.

This weekend I was asked to consult by the owner of a Fender franchise on various aspects of an FSR Strat that he will be commissioning from FMIC's custom shop exclusive for his store. The guitars will be based on a late '56 instrument that he personally owns and will retail for over three large. I was asked to play both the original and an early prototype replica and compare/contrast the two guitars. Lotta fun!

The original FSR None More Black Stratocaster is not a Highway One model but a souped-up version of a pre-2010 American Deluxe featuring an unmarked 22-fret ebony fretboard with MOP side dots. It also has two Samarium Cobalt singles paired with an Atomic humbucking pickup, S-1 switching system and a deluxe 2-point drop-in vibrato bar with an LSR Roller Nut and Schaller locking tuners.

Many Factory Special Runs are crafted in Mexico, others such as the '72 Thinline, Custom and Deluxe Telecasters are USA-made Custom Shop models.

Arjay...your luck is still running on the good side! I had a chance to do the same when the Bill Carson Stratocaster came out (they didn't specifically ask for my opinion though), but it was great to listen in on some of the discussions (with Bill himself) and then actually buy one of these guitars...don't see em for sale much, but they were a beautifully done guitar...cimarron red 57 style body, with a V neck and mine had one sickenly birdseyed out neck! Wish I still had it, but sold it in Germany to a doctor, I just looked and only have one picture of the guitar...going to have to try to digitize it...anyway sorry about hi-jacking the thread, but had to share the story.

Great story, Tango-Two!

I'd have given a lot to sit in on a consult/conversaton with Bill.

Very cool!

Did someone say FSR??

Though completely unnecessary now that the question has been thoroughly answered, I'll still take the opportunity to post a pick of my FSR Am Std!

Aside from the finish/matching headstock, the guitar allegedly has unique wiring. Haven't been able to confirm it though. Retailer says yes it does, Fender says no it doesn't.
(4th position supposedly activates a bridge/neck combo, instead of the standard middle/neck combo - I'm not familiar enough with Strat tones to tell by ear).

Thats one nice looking guitar regardless whether it has special mojo inside it or not, incidentally if you gently tap the magnet pole pieces when selected to position 4 you should be able to tell which pups are "active"

The mystery should then be solved!

Guitar Center had a FSR (Limited Edition?) on 2014 American Standard 60th Anniversary Stratocasters. Does anyone know how many of these guitars were made?

I have one and it is a fantastic strat!

There were quite a few FSR versions in 2014, so maybe post a pic (or pics) of your guitar, someone may have the answer for a specific model.

Fender usually doesn't give production numbers on these (some Limited Editions as exceptions) but you could check the serial with Fender Consumer Relations (support pages; email or the wonderful chat service) to see if they have the info. On GC exclusives, you could also ask them.

It would also seem that their records in respect of FSR's are a bit sketchy. Based on the Serial No from Fender my FSR Swirl finish guitar should be HH. In this run the HH guitars were blue swirl and the natural swirl were SSS (as is mine). The Fender listing of mine is Natural Swirl HH of which there was no such thing.
