I think I need to change the pickups in my ash body strat. I just can't find a sounds I really love as opposed to my other guitars - MIJ 80s strat with texas specials upgrade. Gretsch '57 re-issue Duojet - lovely. American Standard Telecaster - awesome !

I find the sounds of the Ash body strat very bassy / muddy.

I'm playing through a class A 5 watt head with a 12' Jensen Ceramic speaker, also have a Super Champ XD.

Love the sounds of all my guitars, but the ash strat - thinking of changing pickups before I think of selling it.

Perhaps vintage noiseless might work ?

Any thoughts from those more experienced with pickup replacement than I? especially for ash body guitars - which obviously sound very different to Alder.

Thanks in advance for any advice !

I believe your problem lies here.

you could also try replacing the cap with a higher resistance one...

Try swapping out the Texas Specials for a set of CS69's.

Take the Texas Special out of MIJ Strat and put in the ash body Strat.

I like the CS 54's, lower output seems to work will with the Swamp Ash

EMGs work really well with soft bodied guitars.

I had an ash bodied 78 Strat that weighed 11 lbs but sustained like a Steinway Concert Grand,it also sounded fuller and clearer than just about any Strat I'd heard so maybe you may have the same luck with a set of 70s.

is ash consistent between cuts? can it greatly vary in density?

There are a few types of ash I believe with Swamp ash and black ash being most commonly used in guitars.Any species of wood can vary greatly in weight and density depending on what part of the trunk it's cut from and whether the cut is quarter sawn or whatever and even the growing conditions.Black ash is generally a lot heavier and more dense and that's what leads me to believe my '78 Strat was black ash.BTW the "black" comes from the bark colour not the wood colour.

I went for something a little different for my MIM build. GFS Pro-tube lipsticks.
They're kind of chimy and give me some nice surf sounds.

As you can see the body is Ash. I don't think the wood makes much difference to the amplified sound, if any.

....Mark.
