i've never tried vintage tuners on a guitar before... could someone tell me advantages/disadvantages between the two and tell me which ones would be better?

I wouldn't say that one is better than the other; they both can be effective unless you're doing serious dive bombs on a Strat with a standard trem - then you'll probably want locking tuners anyway.

I do prefer vintage tuners because I'm used to them; I've always had at least one guitar with them since I started back in 1979. I've never had a problem with a string popping out (as some folk report) with the technique I use - measure the string out about 2 tuners past the post (i.e. if you're putting on the low E string pull the string straight up the headstock and cut it off at the tuner post for the D string), stick the end in the hold of the E string tuner, bend the string down, hold it in place with your thumb while winding the string.

On the other hand, out of the 45 or so guitars I've owned only 10 of them have had regular tuners; 18 had locking tuners and the remaining 17 have had vintage split post tuners. Therefore I'm really sloppy restringing a regular tuner and will typically wind up with one string with crossed wraps (particularly on a 3-per-side headstock).

+1 on the above, ive got both... no real advantage having one or the other... i just like the feel of the vintage tuners as well as the split post makes life easier and keeps the strings neat... ( had a bad experience with a friends guitar... he had the left over string coiled up on top...)

Vintage tuners rock!

You just snip about 2" off from tuner, poke it in, and screw.

Andddd, with vintage tuners, theres no chance of poking your fingers on string ends once theyre strung

I love the old split post tuners.

Poked fingers suck.

I've got Grover Rotomatics on a couple of Les Pauls but all nine of my Strats have Klusons.

Both standard and vintage were new to me not long ago, so not influenced either way by what someone else said. That being said, I favor the vintage after restringing both kinds several times. IMO, they should make the standard tuners with split posts too.

I believe Schaller does make a standard tuner with a split post - at least they do for G&L as I had an ASAT that had them. They might be a special order for G&L; of course you never know what G&L is going to put on a guitar; some of them have these split-post Schallers (with a G&L logo) and some have standard-post non-locking Sperzels.

Another vote for Vintage Tuners here, they got it right the first time. And when they stick I can give them a squirt of oil.

I have both as well. Need to get that string replaced quickly on stage? Load, lock and tune. Can't beat locking tuners for rapid string replacement. Plus they are super solid, feeling compared to vintage.

Vintage - can't beat the look if you have an older Stratocaster.

i like the fact that i can take the strings off and on really quickly with the vintage tuners, but i can't really use the tremolo with them. i cut the nut perfectly, set up the bridge and used 3 n 1 oil on the tree and nut. it still goes out of tune with these tuners. i'll eventually go with lockers.
