Who heard of making a guitar out of pine?

Leo Fender (early Broadcaster), Glendale and a few other boutique luthiers. As far as tone, it's spanky and balanced; you get some high-end sparkle but it's not too bright or shrill, there's some resonance in there. It has a very "open" sound, even when not plugged in.

Nothing wrong with pine, IMO.

Three-quarters of all the acoustic guitars ever made (not to mention nearly all violins, violas, cellos and lutes) have spruce tops. Spruce being a species of pine.

Far as solid body electrics are concerned, here is a website where top end custom builder Ron Kirn makes a Strat-type guitar from a nice plank of spruce:

If it's good enough for Ron...!

Cheers - C

Amazing as to the general belief that only Alder, Ash, Basswood are the only suitable material for guitars. Pity.

Pine...Of the genus Pinus. In temperate regions there are 90 to 100 species of pine.
Many are excellent material for instrument making. Many of these such as Ponderosa Pine is used for turnery, window frames, furniture. The requirement for structural stability for building the former applications would easily qualify for solid body electrics.

The book " Wood Identification and Use " by the author Terry Porter
Isbn-13: 978-1-86108-436-1 is a great reference book. Should give any one interested in alternative wood selections ideas for constructing guitar bodies.

You do realize that you are refering/hinting at/to live tree's No... :?:
All tree's weep sap, some more than others, Pines, at least the species which would be planted in urban area's are quick growing, the idea being that landscaping needs completion as rapidly as possible.

Granted some species would not be suitable but...

If its stable and/or pretty why not build an electric guitar out of it.

Tread lightly, Andy......your mum's likely to shoot you.

As for pine's use for a solid-body guitar body, I agree. Properly kiln-dried and aged, I see no reason why it wouldn't make for a stable tone wood. It's easy to tool and the grain can be quite attractive.
