As for the Elite Strat, this model not only served as a template for the EC signature series, but also became Ty Tabor's favorite stage and studio guitar before his endorsement deals with Zion and Yamaha.

Tabor later removed the electronics from the guitar and rackmounted them.

Fender Japan produced a 22-fret version of the Elite Strat, which lasted until 1986.

In the meantime, FMIC USA introduced the "Vintage Strat Plus", which was essentially a '57 vintage reissue fitted with the Elite electronics. This short-lived guitar would become the precursor to the Lace-equipped Plus series models of 1987.

Here's a video of Eric singing this chiming Beatles classic.

...and the video shot from the Japanese 1991 concert:

It's important to note that George used an Ice Blue Metallic 1966 Electric XII for the 1991 tour. This guitar, refinished in Firemist Gold a couple of years later, was subsequently played by Andy Fairweather-Low in 2002.

Never seen a Clapton signature Strat in that color although I'm sure they'd make Eric any color he wanted.

Good link....because there's a video of this song from the same tour, on a different night, and the solo does not have the same magic as this one. They gleaned the best of the best for the CD set.

This is reminiscent of the T-Mobile Clapton Guitar which went out in the March auction.

JJ Cale donated his sunburst Elite to the March Clapton auction. Kong and I attended the preview the Sunday before and got up close and personal with both guitars.

One of the cool features of the VG Stratocaster is having the 12-string modeling circuit with four different voices for it.

Continue keeping score, thank you. I've whittled that lead down some today.

Eric's guitar on this one sounds about the same. I'd really have to listen to it note for note to ascertain if it's the same set as the CD's,
but the singing sustain is definitely there. 8)

Got to love this post...Pure Clapton...and my point? Eric or George can do no wrong, especially when playing together.

I really love Eric and Georges interplay from the Japan Tour CD on While My Guitar Gently Weeps...Eric vibrato is long and wide and George ads some great licks on the last solo while playing together intertwining with Eric...great playing.

If you couple Chromeface's remarks about swapping out the TBX, with Mike Eldred's comments elsewhere about EC's preference for the VN's when sent to him for trial, you have the rationale for the current guitar.

Though I understand and appreciate your preference for the more vintage tone, the current electronics gives him the singing sustain he generates when playing high up on the fretboard as he does. One of my favorite examples of this is the guitar solo in "If I Needed Someone" on the CD George Harrison in Japan. Unfortunately, I do not have a link for it.

Right. Well like I said, I understand why Eric wants the mid-boost. It makes for an incredibly versatile instrument. I just prefer the tones he got with his '50's Strats, particularly with Brownie on the Layla album and the Dominos tour. The Clapton signature Strat's are great in a different way. I'd love to have one myself but I personally wouldn't want the mid-boost.

Here's the guitar you're talking about, near this candy green signature prototype (which I suppose was the last stage prototype before the final design) showing the bypass switch (it's not the refinished pewter "smoker's flamed neck model" used during the Saturday Night Music shows with Robert Cray and David Sanborn in 1989).

Image

Eric presumably used the candy green Strat with the extra active/passive toggle for slide playing during the Philadelphia concert in September 7th, 1988. This guitar was also featured in the front sleeve of this Rolling Stone magazine from that year (shown below).

You mean the VG Strat was also able to emulate the Electric XII?

Personally I would use a Variax modeling guitar to emulate a 12-string electric. Not the Firemist Gold Electric XII played by Andy Fairweather-Low, but the original FireGlo Rickenbacker 360/12 George used to record this chiming Beatles track in 1966.

Image

If I want to sound like George did in 1991, I'd probably opt for an original 22-fret Strat XII fitted with a 12-string "hockey-stick" neck and three Seymour Duncan split-coil hum-cancelling pickups (like those found on the MIJ John Jorgenson Hellecaster models). Not sure if Fender sells Strat pickguards routed for 3 split-coils.

Image

The big problem with the "hockey-stick headstock" Strat is the need of a special case to fit the guitar.

That's pretty much what defines the guitar, save for the neck. I'm sure the Custom Shop could build one for you sans active electronics.

It has a 12-string modeling circuit which functions in Strat, Tele, HB, and Acoustic modeling voices, further modified by the 5-way position switch. That guitar, run through my Line 6 Ax2's ZZTop modeling circuit, Baritone voiced in the HB mode makes for a very interesting "Just
Got Paid"
  "If I Needed Someone" becomes a no-brainer. Note that Andy has the guitar capoed on that one, so the tonal colorations become extremely rich. That's clever arranging.
