Ok getting us back on track, Why does a Les Paul with P90s sound the same as a Tele with P90s? Ummmm, I have a 67 Tele reissue, (see below) with a PAF in the neck. Close your eyes and you would never know it is not a Les Paul! :-)

Any key in particular....or does it depend on the song?

Ceri, actually "that product" was "vegamite", which you guys like to joke around about when a thread begins to get too serious. I understand its quite bad.

We get the pork rinds/skins here too. Actually they are quite good to my taste.

I had heard the term "Her Majesty's or His Magesty's subjects" on so many old movies and books. Please pardon me if that's not correct.

Nope, as I think the Pork rinds is a much better topic.....as they have acoustic properties too them.

Yo Ash, acoustic instruments are vastly different than electric instruments. Acoustics rely heavily on the resonance of the woods used in construction to produce sound. On am electric instrument the importance is much much less.

Guitar builders simly carried over their old acoustic opinions and "sold" them as vitally important to the buyers of electric instruments. You pay more for a single solid piece of wood than you do for glued together pieces because the solid chunk is harder to come by.

Test the theory, take a Strat made from fine high quality tone wood and quality electronics and replace the electronic components with the cheaper parts from a Starcaster. See how good it your tonewood sounds now. Put the quality electronics in the Starcaster and the darned thing will sound great (it may feel kinda nasty to play but . . . )

I'm not saying the type of wood doesn't have an impact on the sound of a guitar. What I am saying is that on an electric guitar the impact of the wood used in the construction is of minimal concern compared to the importance of the quality of the electronic components.

Dear mthorn00, Good points! We did a thread on this (well, actually several) that turned into somewhat heated debates as this topic is very controversial. Some of us really think it has to do with well established urban myths, marking tactics by guitar sellers, and, as you pointed out, as a carry over from the guitar builders old acoustic opinions. I think your point hits pretty much on the money and well stated.

I do a lot of custom wiring, as you can tell if you check out my web site. I have taken really cheap Korean made guitars and pumped them up with Seymour Duncans and all USA pots and caps to get super sounding guitars. The plywood bodies and poor construction contributed very little to the overall sound of the finished instrument. Yet, because of marketing strategies, as well as personal investments and preference, some people say they can tell the difference, often BIG differences, in sound. So they adamantly disagree.

There was one thread on the Forum where people really investigated this topic, in a fairly kind spirit, looking at the scientific reasons behind the tone wood theories. It was quite enlightening, but many people came to the same conclusion you did, it may affect the tone some, but not much.

I told the story on one thread about a friend that had a custom made Strat. He paid like around $3200 for it. I played it through my amp here and I really could not tell hardly any difference between it and one of my other Strats. It had the custom Tone wood, brass block and such. I asked him if he could hear a difference and he said emphatically YES! My theory about the situation? His hearing was affected by the layout of $3200 for the guitar!

+1!
I think this is the case with many big $ purchaces, including first cars, homes etc.

I'm with Johny Ramone, if you play loud enough, all guitars start to sound the same.
