Hi Skilvas: Eric believes he can hear the difference between different brands of batteries. Could it be true? I want that man's ears, just to check.

No, No No!!

If this old man's memory isn't too fuzzy, I think I know where this comes from.

I remember long ago reading an interview with someone from Eric's entourage ( i think drummer, not tech,) and the claim was that Eric could tell the difference between wall power and battery and also between Alkaline, and Zinc-carbon batteries in certain pedals, such as his tube screamer. Not that he could tell specific brands apart, but nothing ever gets blown apart on the internet, i guess.

I think there might be something to this, given the massive difference in energy density, and the consistancy of voltage as they discharge. Personally I have never felt it worth the effort to test any of this out personally.

Hi twelvebar: I'm remembering an interview with Eric in Guitarist magazine at the time the first EJ sig Strat came out. The notion that he could tell the difference with his ears between different brands of batteries was mentioned in that interview, though I don't think it was a verbatim quote from the man's own words. I don't recall which brand he favored. Hmm; I guess I should go back and look it up.

...The idea of leafing through two yards of Guitarist backcopies to find it fills me half with delight and half with horror. I wonder which feeling I shall yield to?

Cheers - C

If you want to leaf through old magazines, here's a better option!

Nah, I don't need magazines for that. If I want to see that sort of thing I just don my shades, grab a drink with a parasol in it and step outside onto the golden, girl-laden tropical beaches of Peckham - where the waves crash, the palm trees sway and the conga line never ends.

As you can imagine.

Ah, you've visited, huh?

And have I mentioned the azure lagoon, the coral reefs of, um... Camberwell... and the steaming rainforest stretching away towards the snow capped mountain peaks of... Greenwich?

That's the way I like to think of it, anyhow. :|

Duane Allman preferred somewhat discharged 9 volts in is effect gizmos, I don't know how someone could distinguish brand difference.

I do know Danelectro markets and sells its on "vintage style" batteries for their stuff. supposed to make a difference. Perhaps alkaline batteries have some different qualities.

I have run accross some electronic equipment that speicifies alkaline batteries specifically, so maybe their is something to it.

So when you were 16, which didn't exist?

Cheap guitars, plywood, or Japan?

or possibly all of the above?

let's make it simple guys.... when the string vibrates, the guitar body starts vibrating ('resonance' as mentioned somwehere here). This body-vibration is then passed on to the strings (the cycle goes on) till the vibration dampens. So, basically the emf that the pickups produce has the tonal characterisitcs of the body wood contruct. And thats why tone woods are important for your much loved solid body guitars.

I hope that clarifies.
This is an engineer talking.

When shopping for a solid body guitar, I have a pretty simple test I use to judge a guitar's resonance. I play it unplugged, standing up, and see how much vibration is transferred through the body of the guitar to my body. Some guitars you can feel "ringing like a bell" with vibration/resonance, and others feel "dead."

While I'm sure this is the result of the combination of wood, nut, and bridge, for me this has proven that not all solid body guitars resonate the same.

How does this translate once plugged in? First, in sustain, and second, in the tone.

Don't take my word for it. Try it out yourself.

P.S. I can play my Strat acoustically for you and you could hear it much better than you might expect. I'm using much heavier strings than most--GHS Rene Martinez Big Core Medium (.0115, .015, .019, .028, .038, .056)--in standard tuning. Like most new Strats, this guitar came with .009 thru .042, and they felt like I was playing on rubber bands.

I'd be interested to see the Ramones sales figures in comparison to Rush or Les West. I wonder by how many multiples they outsold them.

Anyway onto what Eric Johnson said. I'll go out on a limb and state that I agree with him partially. At least where fuzz's are concerned. I found batteries knocking out around 5.8v to sound the best. Much below 5volts or above 7 volts don't sound as good.

I maintained the premise that 'there's no accounting for tastes.'' All things being equal, those would be interesting figures. One might include KISS in that research as well. Each has a different marketable product to a variety of consumer bases.
That's known as business.l
