Yeah here...

http://www.guitarsrecycled.com/productssimple.html

3.4 Action
Action is very much determined by your own preference - more than the other measurements.
It is measured with the capo still at fret 1 and you look at the string height between fret 17 and underside of string. A good start is 1.5 mm for E6 and slightly less for E1. Thicker strings need more space.
Take it from there. Adjust by raising or lowering the saddles using the small Allen hex screws.

Well I saw a video on you tube where the guy set the action on the 12th fret using the dime. No capo or anything else.

Seemed like a good enough way. So I guess you would dial in your relief take off the capo slide a dime under each string at the 12th fret and get your string height.

It depends on how anal you are about these things. There is no right or wrong way (ok maybe there are some wrong ways :) ), so if the dime method gives you a comfortable action then that sounds like a reliable way to do it.

I'm currious now how thick a dime is and what action that gives (can you tell i'm one of the anal ones)

I'm not sure how thick a dime is. The guy doing the set up in the video does say how thick it is.

I have not tried the method yet but it was a good little video kind of interesting. More like setting the action in a general method.

Kind of like tuning a guitar based on the low E and the 5th fret. Is your guitar in tune? Yeah. Is it perfectly in tune? No, but it works.

You don't really need to use a capo or a ruler to set your action (which is how far the strings are from the tops of the frets).

Just get each string to a height that's GOOD for you. What that means is a balance between playing comfort and not having buzzing or fretting out when you bend the strings.

Most of us don't play the guitar with a capo on the first fret, so the hieight of the strings with respect to a capo is irrelevant to how we play the guitar.

The really good (experienced) luthiers I've seen don't need to use rulers, they can judge the relief and action by eye and feel.

Thats all true, but once you have things where you like it, I think it's a good idea to document where your at with accurate tools. If you change some other aspect of your setup (string gauge for example) you can get right back to where you were at quickly. I like to tinker, so that happens a lot with me.

It takes a while to get things dialed in where you like it (at least it does for me), and you might want to know exactly where that is.
