I remember that one. I had some input into it. If you read between the lines Mike is as much saying that the rules of the game were different in 1982, which is pretty much what I suggested to Niki, absolutes not withstanding. '82 was the year the 'new' VRI's were coming on board of which Gilmour acquired two...the CAR becoming one of his iconic guitars.

nikininja,Thanks. I've toyed with the idea of trying to put all this down and turn it into a freelance article for a guitar mag (or a book on it if I got really lucky and was able to travel to interview Tom Anderson, John Suhr, etc. in person).

Seems to me either Guitar Player or Premier Guitar did a history of Jackson/Charvel recently. You might want to check their archives on that.

Guitar Player did; I'm a long-time subscriber (going back to late '79) and I have to say that was one of the worst "dash-off" pieces I've ever seen in their pages. It was a 2-page spread in the November 2010 issue, one of which was a full-page photo of Randy Rhoads with that first white Jackson. The text was about 1/2 of a page about Rhoads coming to Grover Jackson wanting a neck-through guitar and how that got started.

In all honesty most of my research is on the Schecter side of the equation (and all the builders who can be traced back to both the company and their original 6 or so dealers), not the Charvel side of the equation.

Following my last post I went off and researched that piece and found it for a re-read. Quite a paltry treatment therein, to say the least. Wonder if there's enough interesting material to warrant an extensive bio treatment of the Charvel/Jackson story, sufficent enought to motivate a publisher. Unless you've a mind to publish it yourself.

John you should. That was a clear and concise piece. Lord knows what you could accomplish given enough time. You obviously have the motivation to do it. The desire to create is obviously there. Talent will out. There's nothing more that talent wants than to be used.

I can just see the hardback copy now. We'll have to set about buying a certain forum users wife flowers, choc's and Bonemassa tickets in a bid for her to publish the book.

Ooo, I wonder which "certain forum user's wife" you're talking about, Nick? :)

Unfortunately, Mrs C is an authors' agent, not a publisher. And books about guitar gear are way away from her area of expertise.

However, a serious suggestion from someone (me) who is an observer from the sidelines on the publishing world. The excellent book that John C is going to write would be precisely the sort of thing that BackBeat Books exist to publish, supposing that in their minds it would fill a gap in their list. Backbeat are a subsidiary of Hal Leonard. A quick enquiry seems to suggest that John Cerullo at Hal Leonard might be a first point of contact in that company:

http://www.halleonardbooks.com/index.jsp?subsiteid=168

But before you send anything off, John C, I do happen to be in a position to offer moderately informed advice on how to go about making a book proposal to a publisher in a form that will at least have it looked at and taken seriously. Don't want to be pushy, but if you are interested by all means PM me.

I for one would buy your book!

Cheers - C

[Later] Though of course it belatedly occurs to me that if Forum user John C turns out to be one and the same as John Cerullo of Hal Leonard Books then everything in my previous post becomes fairly redundant!

...I suppose this isn't Mr Cerullo we find ourselves talking to on the Forum - is it? John C has certainly shown himself mighty well informed about the history of electric guitars through his time here. 8)

Cheers - C

It would seem we're mixing it with the big boys now mate.
Talk about trying to sell air con to Icelanders. Where's Nonnig when you need him.

John, I think you need to go full steam ahead with the book. There's a lot of midlife crisis'ers like myself that would buy it.

No, that's not my last name; I'm just a marketing researcher by trade (mostly in business-to-business settings like insurance and investments but some consumer goods and political) through which I've found it handy to develop an in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. Guitars are my passion so I've applied that same work ethic to my hobby.

Thanks for the tips; if I ever get to that level I will be in touch. Right now it's all in my head so I need to get what I have down into a file and then see where it goes.

A journey begins with the first step and no better a door opener than Ceri, in this instance.

WOW!!! Now here we go, try this one, I'm gonna put a FORD 4X4 decal on mine and see what comes next.

Just kiddin' man, but this is really a wild thread, most of these things with Gilmour's Strat are well documented, and along with that there is so much more info in this thread it just makes my head go........BOOOOOMMMMMM....

No, that's not my last name...

Okey dokey. Writing stuff down so that it is coherent enough for others to get is a great way of improving our own understanding of a subject. A worthwhile exercise in its own right.

And if the quality of the writing and the material turns out to be good then I wouldn't be in the least surprised if there is something publishable here, whether as a book or articles. Or webpages, perhaps? Give us a shout if we can help: who to approach, how, contracts - that sort of stuff.

Meantime, carry on your informative posts on this Forum, please! Some of us have noticed their quality.

Good luck - C

It's amazing what you can notice when you've been off the brew for a couple of days.
