Hey guys,

I'm trying to check the intonation on my guitar (1 month old American Standard Strat) and when I check the harmonic at the 12th fret, the tuner's needle gets all erratic and jumps all over the place on the 1st two strings (high E & B). The B string is worse.

I'm not sure if it's my technique or if I should check something on the guitar.

Any ideas??

The tuner is a Korg GA-30, FWIW.

Thanks guys,
Jazzy

Pickups set too close to the strings?

The open strings register perfect on the tuner. I forgot to mention that.

+1 Retroverbial

I would also suggest trying position 2 of the pup selector switch (bridge and RWRP middle) when doing the harmonic tuning. I get the same thing when I use the bridge pup by itself, switching to pos 2 it's stable. Another possibility is that other strings are vibrating from the resonance of the plucked string, try muting the other strings.

Hey guys,

Well, I did what some of you had suggested. I made sure to pluck the area right over the neck pickup, which helped tremendously but what really locked it into place was putting the selector in the 4th position (neck/middle). Before that I was trying only the neck pickup or bridge pickup. Wierd about the selector position but what ever...

Thanks guys,
Jazzy

The complexity of harmonic notes often confuses tuners.

Tame it down by using the neck pickup and turning the tone control right down. Never known it fail.

I used fretted string on the 12 th fret, work better than harmonic.

And I use the PETERSON Virtual strobe tuner VS II,

All ordinary tuner are too erratic for intonation. Try our best with your tuner but don't waist too much time.

I find it easier and more accurate to tune with a pickup selection that has 2 pickups active for this very reason. :)
