I have an HSS MIM strat and I'm thinking about splitting the coils in the humbucker. anyone have any advice, wiring diagrams etc. about how to do this? I'm pretty good with a soldering iron, so that part doesn't scare me, but I would like to be able to do this without putting an extra switch (i.e extra hole) in my scratch plate if possible.

Thanks.

Howdy!

No probs! :D

Just replace your lower tone pot for a push/pull pot. I'm not 100% on the wiring colour translation but the above is wired for a Fender made Humbucker. If you find yours is different let me know and I'll re-do the diagram for you.

Hope this helps

Andy

Thanks Andy.

I haven't opened anything up yet, but I can tell you that there have been no mods done yet, my Strat is as it came out of the box (off the wall actually) 8 years ago.

Thanks for the help.

Before you go splitting, get an info sheet from Fender Customer Relations. I just did that for a fat strat that I bought, which originally had the switching so that it had the hum, one coil (or split) plus middle, then just middle etc.

So what I'm saying is that you might already have the split hum and not even know it.

I can't give you wire colors or switch positions as mine had a bunch of stuff changed including the pickguard and the bridge pickup to an SD Hot Rail.

@Jack,

I have the 5 position switch, but no push/pull tone pot on my strat. You're saying that one of the 5 positions may be a single coil bridge position? If so, how could I tell without pulling the pickguard? BTW, I will contact customer relations... and thanks.

this a crude drawing of a witing diagram I came up with. don't look at the toggle I threw in, but if you wire it to have a master tone, you can use the other tone pot as a "variable tap" which enables you to dail in any amount of the humbucker you please.

Thanks bobrox. Intereting idea, dialing in the right amount of HB mix.

Hi digby,

You can have a split bucker in position 4 and a full bucker in position 5 with the use of a 5 way super switch.

All you do is assign one of the 4 poles to ground and add the split tap wires of the humbucker to the relevant terminal. If this is something your interested in I can provide you with a wiring diagram.

Hope this helps.

That is extremely cool... so, in effect, this can be a "no cost" mod, if i have the right switch under the hood. Andy, I'll definitely let you know if I'll need the wiring diagram, but I won't waste your time before I call customer service and see how I'm already wired up.
