I'd think that after a year, the pickup would still work, considering that there are pickups on guitars that are many decades old that "still work". If it's still in the box, and you haven't degaussed the magnets, then there should be no problem using it.

as far as testing it, I would think that you could wire it to a 1/4 inch plug, plug it into your amp (turn the amp down real low) tap it and see if you can get any sound out of it. I've never done this myself, but it makes sense to me, again, if you feel the need to test it. There are certainly people in this forum that can give better advice than me.

Good luck.

thanks it's just that i'm afraid that it could have been exposed to magnitism or something...

lol you dont need a fluke, and $5 volt meter from the drug store will work just fine.

You can hold a pickup next to the strings of a guitar to hear it through an amp.

I hook up a cord to the pickup, plug the cord into an amp.
I set a guitar on a stand, strum the strings, and put the pickup next to the strings.
Voila! You tell if it works and hear what it sounds like!

i have 2 flukes myself. i like them. dont see where i suggested i was confused.
i often see flukes being suggested or refered to for use with our guitar stuff.
when folks not in the know look these up they see the bigger price tags and freak or shy away because of the price tag. i just wanted to make it known that flukes types arent actually needed to get this job done or most any of the guitar needs. a simple $5-$10 unit will do. sure you cant do nowhere near as much with the cheap ones but most everything you will ever need to do for guitar can be done with the cheap units. no biggie.

Generally, permanent magnets (the magnets in your pickup) reach a stabilization point in terms of their magnetism. Once they hit that point, it takes literally decades for it to get away from that stabilization point. The things you have to really worry about is the leads and wind.

Well, now that we're talking about it, there is a point where a permanent magnet does lose it's magnetism is well, a a certain-certainly high temp. If you do a quick search on google about Curie Points, it'll help explain.

Also, the video posted up is a great video. You could also use alligator clips for the patch cord and the pickups. If they're still in the guitar, just switch through positions.

You can't find a cheap meter that measures capacitance and inductance ... unfortunately.
