The only painted fretboard I've ever seen is on those goofy LE "So-Cal" Strats that Fender issued a few years back. As to how they play and how they wear, I have no idea. I think those guitars were intended more as "wall-hanger" decorations than true daily-play instruments.

There are plenty of guitars with cleared fretboards. It would be no difference to have a color painted on.

Right. Westone had a model that had painted necks. The Spectrum. Should be no different than a regular clear-coated neck.

I had a 1991 Aria Pro II. It had what appeared to be an Ebony fretboard. Turns out it was solid mohagany with a maple fretboard painted black. If you paint the fretboard, you'll wear off the paint, just like my guitar. It was so bad, I actually had groves in the fretboard from years of my fingers pressing on the fretboard.

I've never painted a fretboard, but I have some knowledge of wood and paint products. I think you would want to use either a stain or a tinted primer. Something thin that will sink in and not sit on the surface of the wood. The thicker the paint, the more likely it will chip and wear off, and probably look uglier than a painted fretboard. Sorry, not my idea of a good guitar mod.

My american standarsd has a clear high gloss, all paint is, is the same with coler. Be carefull to use the same kind of high impact fimish as fender uses, and you shold be fine.

Billy Gibbons (and by extension, Dusty Hill) have played guitars with painted fretboards for years. John Bolin made various guitars with finished fretboards for the ZZ Tops over the years...
