I have an HSS MIM Strat. When nothing is plugged into the amp, Carvin V16, the amp is silent. When I plug in the guitar there is a low volume noise. When I touched the strings it MOSTLy went away. I checked the ground wire from the bridge and it was loose. I bent the tab that holds the wire to the "spring"/tension adjustor plate and resoledered it. It is a lot more quiet now but still is not silent. Now touching the strings has no effect on the noise. I can't hear the niose whrn playing. Resistance from bridge to cable nut is about 0.4 ohms.

Is this idling noise normal?

Bill

Hey man, single coil pups will have some hum. It's the nature of the beast. Check to see what kind of eletronics are near you, that might help some. If it really bothers you, try some vintage noiseless pups. I don't realy mind the single coil hum. They've been that way from day one and it hasn't bothered any of our hero's from yesteryear who didn't have any other options.

No lights, no TV. The humbucker does it too but not as loud. Probably not a problem just checking.

Thanks,

Bill

Could simply be noise in your mains.

humbuckers will create some hum, especially the cheap ones that are put into standard MIM guitars. they are not truly noiseless, like the name suggests. they are just less noisy than single coils.

another reason for the hum could be your amp. i don't know how big your amp is, or how high quality the amp is. cheap amps will hum, especially smaller ones. but usually carvin amps are good. and if the AC is low quality going into your amp, it will create hum.

you could try to get a power conditioner, or shield your guitar, or upgrade your pickups.

Check this out, I was having basically the same issue, UNTIL, I discovered that the halogen floor lamp I had in my office when turned on was making my twin reverb hum - and I mean hum bad. I thought it was my tele or the amp itself. So check what you have close by to your amp. good luck. 8)
