I normally play using the neck pickup of my MIM Standard Strat (w/ SCN pickups). Next favorite in neck and middle, followed by middle alone. I use the bridge and middle for a few tunes, very rarely use the bridge by itself. The guitar is wired using a CRL 5-way switch. Only the neck and bridge have tone controls (both wired with the Greasebucket circuit). The middle is wide open. The tone and volume controls are wired in vintage 50's Gibson fashion to reduce treble rolloff when turning the volume down.

The first time I switch to or through the middle/bridge positions from the neck or middle positions, there is a loud "pop" from the guitar. After that is is dead quiet. I can flip rapidly through all positions and things are dead quiet. I have examined my wiring very closely and can find nothing wrong.

Thought? Suggestions?

For the first four months i had my guitar i had a loud scratching sound in my switch too. It went away just when i was going to buy contact cleaner. Break in i guess.

Spray some switch/contact cleaner in there and work it back and forth a few times.

Sounds like it may just be a static discharge.

Sometimes its worth grounding the 5 way switch to the back of the vol pot with everything else. The foil on the pickguard doesn't always do the job IMO.

sounds like it could be a combination of both... dirty switch and a static problem... no harm done with grounding everything properly...

I'll open the guitar up and try this the next time I change strings. Might help, certainly won't hurt.

The switch contacts are spotlessly clean, by the way.
