Hi,

I found a strat body wreck. It has a serial number/date/type (?) penciled in the pot cavity: 10=2BBY.

Description:
- black thin cracky paint (not the thick glossy poly one)
- alder (at least looks like)
- fender trem (fender writen on the saddles)
- creamish pick-guard
- no PU, no pots

Based on that penciled 10=2BBY, does anybody know if this body is a fender one ? And if not a fender who could have made it ?

Thanks for your help,

Stratically yours,

Superfofo

If you could determine if the bridge assy is original to the body, the fact that the saddles are Fender would make it a Fender, unless of course, the saddles were replaced. I'd have to guess that saddle replacement with Fender saddles is quite unlikely though. (usually players want to upgrade to better saddles if they've been changed out).

Tough call at any rate. :?:

I would wager a good amount that the body is Japanese-made. Probably a Tokai or Greco or something copy. That is the type of code you'll find in such instruments. Based on your description ("cracky paint"), it could be an older one.

Depending on the condition, you could make a nice "strat" out of it.

Thanks for the hint.

I went on the Tokai site. Tokai made some very nice and high quality guitars (nothing to do with todays chinese crap). Even SRV was playing Tokay strat before he was endorsed by Fender.

The 10=2BBY effectively looks very similar to the Tokai numbering scheme. I asked the question on the forum but didn't get a precise answer until now.

The neck coming with thiy body is similar to a 63-65 strat one, with the thin rosewood fingerboard.

Refering to the Tokai catalogues and to summarise, this strat wreck is presumably a 63-65 strat copy built by Tokai in the early 80's.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Yes, it's Tokai. Check out the images at this link:

You bet Tokai makes quality instruments. They are currently one of the makers of Fender Japan guitars.

Very convincing argument for the body - I guess the saddles were changed out at some point then.

That's some amazing sleuthing orvilleowner!

Thanks Strataholic.

I have a good memory. I'd seen that kind of marking before, obviously.
