I notice that most pickups use alnico II, and V magnets. Why aren't alnico III magnets used more? Alnico IIIs were the magnets of choice in the original 54 strats. What sound characterstics differ the alnico III over the other more popular alnico magnets?

i can't say for sure, but i'm guessing that alnico III just doesn't have the sonic qualities that are needed for today's players

(if you're looking for an alnico III pickup by any chance, lindy fralin makes one, but, as is the case of all fralins, they're pretty expensive cause their handwound)
lots of people swear by fralins

The magnetic domains of the Alnico V mags are smaller and therefore more tightly packed within the alloy... more domains will reproduce more detail from the original source.
