im getting alota ping in the nut of my 2007 american stratocaster deluxe. i must say i wish i had just went with the american standard but thats another topic. i have a 2 point floating tremolo but i lowered it down and recalibrated my bridge so it wasnt floating it performs more like a standard now cause if i broke a string or screwed with tuning i had to retune it 12 times to acheive harmony. but when i use the whammy i go outa tune and i get horiible ping. now it usually only happens with old string but i need my guitar to be more rugged and not perform badly when the strings get a week old.

so how do i get rinda nut ping. real bone nut? file out slot? will that cause buzz?

i use GHS nickel rockers .10s

I have a bone nut on my LP & I had ping problems. I did what others suggested; I scribbled some graphite from a pencil in the nut grooves. It worked fine. If it doesn't work, the strings may be too thick for the grooves, & you may need to file. You'll also want to lube other contact points as well, bridge saddles, pivot points on the bridge etc.. using 3n1 oil, vasaline, etc. applied w/a toothpick. I even used canola oil. :)

Get some good wax'y dental floss and floss your nut grooves. If the problem persists get a set of welding tip cleaners and lightly run them through the slots. Then floss the slots too.

I prefer floss to grease. It doesn't attract dust and grime that then mixes into the grease and causes future problems.

Welding tip cleaners

Just be very light handed with em. You're getting the gunk out, not deepening the slots.

I like the floss idea. Good one.

I'll second the graphite from a sharp pencil idea. I do it with every string change and with every guitar I buy. If you EVER hear that little "tink" when tuning, bending or using the trem, that's your problem. Oh, also gunk under the string T. Chapstick, vasoline, whatever you have.

from my experience a ping in the nut is a result of the string binding or catching behind the nut. Graphite usually does the trick. If the problem persists then you may want to have the slots filed.

If I have a ping, my first plan is to make sure the slot is cut right. Big enough and smooth enough. Once that's done, I found nothing better than a tiny dab of petroleum jelly, applied with a toothpick, in each nut slot. Every time you change strings. And yes, put a dab under the string trees where the string contacts them. Works.

Chapstick has been said to be a good nut lube.

So glad it worked out for you. Kind of does two things at once.

I'm quite interested in trying a chapstick too.
