hi, i have a Highway 1 HSS strat. I love it, but i dont really like the humbucker, i would love to get it replaced with a normal single coil bridge pickup.

it seems to me that all i would have to do would be to get a new pick gaurd along with some new pickups.

Would this be easy to do? or would it be better if i just got another SSS strat someday.

Thanks!

p.s. this is my first post here, and i am very impressed with this site.

Welcome to the Forum!

It is pretty simple to do a change such as that. Personally I would change the pots too.

Pots are just a few dollars each. Cost would depend on what pickups you get.
You can find Strat pickguards that are already pre-loaded (pickups and pots pre-wired) and ready to install.

eBay would probably be your best bet.

Just curious... why would you want to change the pots? Unless they are broken or you have a cheapo strat, yours' may become a collectors item in 20 years or so (as many strats do!). If a savvy collector saw that the pots had been changed or even if the original solder joints have changed, the value of your instrument will decline!

I'd suggest that you give them a shot of Calilube!

If you are looking for a hot single coil for the bridge, try a Seymour Duncan Custom. I have one in my MIM Strat, with a Twang Banger in the middle and Vintage in the neck.

humbuckers and single coils come standard with different pots. you could run them through the same pots, but it would change the sound of the pickup.

I just went through this with my HSS.

I wanted to change the bridge and decided to go with an eBay pre-loaded pickguard with Tex-Mex pups.

Its a little more cash up front ($170) than just changing the bridge and pots, but the ability to easily swap back and forth was kinda nice.

Either way, its a fun change... good luck.
