Hello All.

I just bought a set of Texas Special pickups and wired them into my strat. I have a question for anyone who knows about how to properly install pickups...

The Bridge and Middle Pickups sound amazing!
but
The Neck Pickup sound really thin with less volume than the other pickups. I have already tried re-soldering it to see if I made a poor connection, and I have of course adjusted the pickup height, and neither of these resolved the issue.

Any ideas?

I can't wait to get it all set up. The bridge and middle pickups sound so good already. This is going to be the best sounding guitar I have ever played once I get the neck working.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Is the pickup height too low or is the height set correctly? If the pickup is too low, it won't pickup the string vibration as it should. Starting at the easiest fix first.

Yep. I've already adjusted pickup height.

But what did you adjust it to be and how does it compare to the height of the others?

If the height is properly set all accross the board, only thing I could interject is either a wiring issue or there is something up with the pickup itself.

I ended up trying it at just about every height just to see if it would make any difference. It picks up the string vibration and sound, but it is just a thin nasal sound, way more trebly than the bridge pickup, and very very thin. I've played Texas pickups before and the sound of the neck is usually full and round, this pickup did not approach a full sound at any height.

Check and make sure you didn't reverse the hot and ground wires and wire it out of phase with the other pickups.

On the single coils the black wire is always the ground right? I just soldered the 3 black wires to the same spot that the original pickups were soldered to.

Correct. If all the other wiring checks out, then I would say you have a bad pickup.

you can try reversing the wires, make black the lead and white the grnd.
could be who ever wound the pu reversed the colors of the wires.

i will add, if thats the case chances are the polarity of the pickup might change, making it out of phase in the inbetween positions, and not the neck pickup alone.

I'll try it after I put the kids to bed.

As others have mentioned, if it's really weak, the pickup could be damaged.

Do you have a multi-meter to check the resistance of the pickup?
