Believe it or not, all of the input is actually what I was after in the first place. I wanted to hear something else besides Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan. Now I'm hearing BareKnuckle, Klein, etc. etc. Gives me more options to look up on youtube or whatever to see if I like what I'm hearing. I know about Lollar because I have a set of his Firebird pickups, and I really like the sound of the blackface set. So maybe I'll go with those. But, I like the look of staggered poles and don't think I should have to pay extra for them.

I have a 57 AVRI strat and play blues. I play through a DRRI and a 64 RI Vibroverb. For my $, I like the Lindy Fralin Blues set. When you pick near the bridge and with some attack on the strings, you get a really nice meaty vintage tone. Also, I had the tech. install the base plate with the bridge p/u. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, though.

For Strat pickups, I've had expirience with Tex-mex, Texas Special's, the Alnico V's (American Standard pups), Vintage Noiseless, Seymour Duncan Antiquity's, and '57/'62's amoung others. My favorite would be the Duncan Antiquity's.

Now, having said that, I've been told that pickups quite possibly have less influence on the sound of a Strat than other guitar models such as a Tele or a Les Paul. Something about the wood and the body design of a Strat. Different pickups will certainly make a difference, but not as much of a difference as they would make in a Les Paul or Tele, or so I've heard.

From personal expirience I can tell you that I own two Strat's with '57/'62 pickups. Both of them have different sounds. Is it the wood? Wiring? Bridge? Differences in the laquer? Maybe a combination of all. Point is that changing pickups can be a crap shoot. For example, you probably won't recreat the sound of a Custom Shop Strat simply by installing the same pickups used in said Strat into a MIM Strat. It's tough to know how a set of pickups will respond to your guitar but there are lots of choices out there. Again, my opinion, for vintage Strat tone, Duncan Antiquity's.

Very true, the resonant frequencies of the guitar wood itself will most certainly have an influence on the way the pickup tone is received.

I'm not so sure about that theory on strat pickup swapping not having as significant enough variation as Les Pauls and Teles. Probably the most noticeable, complete tone-changing pickup swap I ever did was take the gainy American strat single coils out of a 2001 Am. Strat and loaded it up with custom 69's.

Then again I've done very few Tele pickup swaps and only a couple humbucker swaps so I'm not going to completely disregard it.

Yeah I can't really speak to that point from personal expirience myself, these are things that I've been told by people who claim to know. I have swapped pickups on one Epi Les Paul, one Epi Firebird and two Strats. All the guitars had a noticeable change in tone to my ear, but everybody's ear is different.

Duncan Antiquity Firebird pickups. I heard such great things about the Antiquity's and they make a set of mini-humbuckers and a set of Firebird pickups so I went with them.

I'm not hearing any love for Lace Sensors...

I'm considering changing my Standard Series pickups for Lace's Red/Silver/Blue set.

Any thoughts on this?

I thought about going with the Antiquities, but went with Lollar instead. They sound great, and have PLENTY of oomph. I don't turn the guitar to full volume unless I want to sound like Neil Young. To tell the truth I thought the original Epiphone pickups sounded pretty good too. The only thing I couldn't stand was a lack of volume on the high E string. It's like the pickups didn't register that area of the guitar. Once the pickup swap happened it went away.

DiMarzio Area Pickups. Great tone!

These are the worst pickups to put in a Strat in my own experience

I had Area 58's put in my 2003 American Fat Strat and it was like listening to nails down a chalk board

I realized what the problem was when I had a closer look at the Area 58's tone guide -

Bass - 3.5
Mids - 3.5
Treble - 9

These pickups are so treble oriented that they will make a naturally bright sounding strat sound like total trash.

It was a good lesson to learn even though it took me a while wondering why my tone was so bad.

Quite enjoying my dominger set. Stinger, hippie 68 and single shot in the bridge. Definitely a change from a normal strat. I'm thinking of putting a hippe 68, hippie 68 and single shot set into my am standard.
