I want to know opinions on what you consider the best aftermarket Strat pickups. Which maker nails the vintage sounds, who makes the best matched set, etc, etc. Any and all opinions welcome.

Oh Lord.. here's a thread that could go on forever. :?

Assuming you dont mean other Fender pickups, I always go for Seymour Duncans personally. "SSL1"s for vintage sound, or even "Antiquities". Generally speaking, for good all rounder SD strat pickups, I go for "Alnico 2 Pro"s.

IN my humble opinion, Bareknuckle pickups are some of the best money can buy............ful stop!

ASk 10 different people and you'll geta dozen different answers.Personally I've never considered replacement pickups because when I buy a guitar I make sure that the tone of it is something that I can live with for a long time.I've heard good reviews of Duncan Antiquities and Jason Lollar pickups but I'm not at all familiar with them.

I always see Seymour Duncan brought up in a pickup thread...but this is the first time I've seen anybody recommend Bareknuckle for anything besides humbuckers. I'll have to go check them out. I like Seymour Duncans....a friend of mine put a set of LiveWires in a Flying V and made it a tone monster...as long as you don't turn up the guitar past 5. I think they're really an active '59 and JB, which are good pickups in their own right. Keep the info coming!! I'm sure I'm not the only guy around here who is solder-gun happy. Makes me want to head over to Warmoth to come up with a new project!!

I just bought a set of Bare Knuckles "Sultan's" and they sound just fantastic. So my vote goes to them.

Cheers

David

I went with Pete Biltoft's Vintage Vibe SP-90's.

http://www.vintagevibeguitars.com/pickup_sc.html

They're P-90 pickups sized to fit in a Stratocaster.

You get the warmth and girth of a P-90, but retain the sparkle and spank of a Strat.

They're reasonably priced, too.

I use Lindy Fralin Vintage Hot pickups without the baseplate on the bridge pickup. They have a sweet tone and a nice vintage Fender vibe. These pickups work well with any style of music and sound nice when dirty.

I also like the Fender Custom shop pickups like the Texas Specials, 54's and the Fat 50's.

Just don't think of pickups in terms of bluesy, jazzy, rock but rather bright, middy, full, etc. It is the tone that you are after. Listen on youtube to get some sense of what the pickups sound like and be sure to listen to the clean sound so you know what the true tone of the pickups are.

Unfortunately you have to buy them before you try them unless you know people that use pickups you are interseted in.

Oh Mike, thats a easy one. Everyone knows the definition of 'Best' is BareKnuckles.

In all seriousness, I love my BK's. Tim Mills will build you pretty much anything you want, except singlecoil sized buckers. For the same price as the base pickup. But I think you have to go a hell of a long way to beat Larry Dimarzio's gear. The original replacement company.

For me, I would be hard pressed to pick out a single company, but from the ones I have encountered I really like Bareknuckles, and Jason Lollar pickups.

really though, it's so subjective. None of us can tell you which you might prefer.

IMHO Sliders Pickup's from Australia. They are hand wound to vintage specs with the middle pickup being reverse wound. Sliders also sells complete electronics sets (pots switch pickups and cap with cloth wiring) on a fender pickguard which are amazing.
