Hi

I've only ever played acoustic for the last 30 years or so.

I went and bought myself a 2010 American Standard Stratocaster last august and I'm just getting used to the whole multiple pickup, different action / lighter strings thing etc.

I run it through my desk and studio monitor speakers. I play around with eq etc, or I run it through my 60w AER acoustic amplifier.

I'll probably just continue through the desk for now, but I'm wondering about effects.

Where do I start?

I like warm bluesy / folksy kind of tones.

I've seen Pods, Protools Eleven and various other brands.

Can anyone point in the right direction.

I do like the Strat, just takes some getting used to.

Cheers

O

if you want a pretty good multi unit thats very affordable, Zoom makes one called the G1N, or G1N-ext(with built in effects pedal for wah, volume, etc.)
it's around $70 USD and has a pretty amazing array of amp/effects/artist/song models.

With your setup, and that you're not using a traditional guitar amp, I'd look at the Vox Tonelab series of multi effects units.

Or if you're into computers, check out the Amplitude/Fender amp modelling software.

Line 6 POD HD Desktop is your way to go!
It´s on pre-order on several stores.
I own the HD300 and I can say the Amp models on those things are amazing!

The Vox Tonelab gets my vote but if you want to go simple an overdrive pedal and a chorus would be a good start.A good overdrive can give some Uumph to your tone while a good chorus can add some depth and fullness to your tone.

If they're still making the 2.0 and you have little experience with electric the old version of the POD could be your ticket. It's reasonably priced compared to the newer technology, comes with a better manual than the newer versions, and has enough fun stuff built in that it will help you keep up your chops for a long time coming.

I use a digitech RP250. It has a usb laptop interface and you can download X-Edit from the digitech site. With this, it displays all the possible pedals, effects, amps, cabinets, pickup changes, etc. After some getting used to, and getting away from the factory presets, you realize that you can set it up like individual pedals, turning them on/off, swapping them, making your settings. Then you can save an effect into one of the user presets.

I use this with headphones at home and in a worship band, where I'll line up my sounds for each song and just tap one pedal between the ring of the last chord of one song and my lead in to the next.

Big fan of the Tech 21 line. Start with a Blonde pedal and then maybe add a Boost Chorus.

I run my 2010 Clapton ltd. ed. (blue, if you care) through a Digitech Crossraods (Clapton) pedal with the "Badge" leslie setting on a slow sweep with a touch of overdrive, the pedal offers that. Then I run that into my 16 track Fostex VF160 recording board, for "in studio". It sounds fantastic!
It just depends on the tone you are looking for, but that works for me !
Good luck, man.

I like my Boss ME-50. Works just like a Boss pedal. Very easy and great sound. No longer in production but I would recommend giving the ME-70 a test drive.

This is my effects boad (DOD VGS50) :

I have had it for over 10 yrs and never had any problems - you can get a wide range of tones out it (especially for dirty - anything from blues to metal).

They would be cheap as chips these days I'm sure.
If you are looking to record into a pc I am considering getting one of these as my next purchase:

For warm blues/folk tone you can't beat a tube amp with spring reverb when your playing electric. All the Zooms and the Line 6 Pods kills the dynamics of your playing. If you're just looking for recording on a computer you can record clean and add effects later.

The Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (or most of fenders amps) is a really good one. Can't really go wrong with a Vox Ac30 either, very different from each other. Then you have the Marshals who are a lot more "rocky", will never give you a real clean tone but has lots of good sound for rock.

I own a Simms-Watts 100 head that I run trough a Fender Super-Sonic 212 Cab. It's an all-tube setup and I run strictly analog effects and the sound is amazing. I use a Geofrey Teese wah, analog man Sun Face fuzz, analogman King of Tone Overdrive, Small-Stone Phaser from EHX.... Ok you get the picture...Lots of stuff aquired over the years. Point being that it all gets ekstra warmth, sparkle and body from the tubes, even the cleanest sounds.

Get a good amp first, effects later.
