Hi I have just wired up my Fender, plugged it in and there is loads of constant noise out of the amp. Because I wired it myself, I don't trust the connections, but is this an earthing connection that is weak? If so, which earthing point? Pots, jack plug, trem claw on back? cheers for any help!!

You might want to tell what wiring you did and then people can help troubleshoot the problem.

Hi Stefanovic,

Yes, show your wiring diagram, and a picture or two of the underside of the pick guard, with a closeup of the pots and selector switch might be helpful.

Ok here are a few pics of my project. As well as judging the quality of the soldering connections, is it normal to have such thin wires going to the output jack? Cheers

Definitely need to do a better job with those poor solder joints, but the biggest part of the problem may be that your output jack is wired backwards. It looks like you have the negative soldered to the tip and the positive soldered to the sleeve. Is that correct, or is my vision poor?

I don't know what's what on a jack plug, but there are two small lugs with holes in, then the third one is the larger leg where the jack actually sits. I have soldered the ground to the right lug and the live to the left lug (if the large leg is above). I checked my other Fenders and they are wired the same.

The jack wires seem pretty thin, would that still be ok?

The grounds to the control-pot casings and the trem claw look to be "cold" joints to me -- give those connections a light-but-brisk tug and I'll bet they pull right loose.

AWG22 is the specified wire size for Fender guitars.

The thin wires are OK, but the negative wire (black), which connects to the back of a pot, should connect to the sleeve solder terminal (the sleeve is the inner metal hole) of the output jack. The two solder terminals on the jack are for the positive (tip) and negative (sleeve) wires to connect. The "third one" that you refer to is not a solder connection point, it is where the tip of the guitar cable touches when inserted. Try swapping the two wires on the output jack and see if that cures the noise problem.

Yeah, one other thing, after you clean up the solder joints like Arjay pointed out, check the continuity to make sure a good connection has been made, you should do that with the input jack and the tip and sleeve of a cord plugged in also to make sure it's right like shimmilou pointed out...your solder joints should look bright and shiny, not dull and grey.
Don't feel bad, though, soldering like anything else takes some practice to become skilled at it.
