Aside from WHAT it IS, it looks like a well-played guitar!
Anyone who played an axe for such an extent of time that it looks like that (smoker or not), shows that it has "worked" for him/her, and no-one would have played a "crap axe" for that long, or extensively.
*Keep Perspective*

Some guitars sound great off the rack, but they only mature after a good few years of "hard-play".
My opinion only 8)

Have you checked the specs for the serial number with Fender yet ?
That'll answer a few questions, methinks

I don't think Fender's database goes back that far.

Well, the truss rod plug looks like a real american neck. If you took one of the tuners off you can see if there's 2 pin holes for fender tuners. Logo looks correct. Made in the USA looks a little skinny, but might be real.

Also take out the string trees and see if there's 2 holes for each. American necks at the time used roller sting trees and used 2 holes, one for the screw and 1 for a pin to hold it in place.

I have a couple of E4 american strats and can post a pic of the headstock if you want.

If it's an american neck it's worth more than you paid for the guitar, so would of been a good deal.

That would be great if you could post a pic. The neck has been repaired at one point in time and looks as if it will need a little additional work. Is it possible the original guitar was dropped and the repaired neck put on a squire body?

Sorry if I come off a newb but string trees? Are those attached to the tuners?

There are two holes for the tuners. I also pulled those off to do some additional cleaning.

Underneath each tuner, on the back of the headstock, look for two small dents or divots in the wood. These divots will be between the tuner peg hole (big hole) and the tuner mounting screw holes, and they are impressions left by the original American modern style tuners. These divots should be there for an Am Strat from that time, and would be another indication that the tuners are not original to the neck, and they definitely don't look like the original tuners. The string trees are the two metal pieces on the front of the headstock, between the decal and the tuners, they each hold two of the strings down.

Here is a close up picture of what is under the tuner:

Looks like there is an additional hole under the string trees. So it looks like it is the real deal...at least the neck.

The string trees are on the front of the head stock, where the EB and the GD strings go under to give them more of a downward angle. So far it's looking good though.

I'll post a pic after I'm down eating breakfast.

Yes, those two additional holes were for the original tuners, I guess that they are really holes instead of just divots, so it does appear that the neck is a real US made from the 80s. :)

Ok here's a pic of my headstock. Mine is from a strat plus so it had a different kind of nut, so ignore that and just compare the text.

OK. Very cool indeed. Looks like the exact same size text in the right place. Looks legit. I guess I don't feel too bad about being taken. What caught my eye initially was the neck. Regardless, I am happy with my find.

Wish there was a way to figure out what the pickups are exactly.

Is there a reference site with pictures?

Neck is legit with replaced tuners and string trees.

Body is from a Squier, so is the bridge. The pickups are just cheap ceramics and can be from anything from a MIM standard, Squier, or other asian import.

I'll agree that is a legit American Standard neck (made sometime between the fall of 1986 and early 1988) with changed tuners and string trees. Hey, the neck alone, even with the mods, is worth about what you paid for the entire guitar.
