Hello peeps, I bought a neck for my guitar body recently, fitted it but not sure if it is the right size. The neck pocket is about 19mm deep and the neck heel is 59mm wide...
I have some pics here of it, and was wondering if anyone could tell me whether it will work well in terms of playability, or if the neck is too high? Cheers!

Looks to sit a little high off the body. No doubt because of the thick maple cap.

It should be ok if you raise the saddles or the bridge. As long as the scale length is correct.

Question. What is the difference between a 21 fret neck and a 22 fret scale ? is the fret spacing wider on either one ? how does it affect playing ? is one preferred and why.

From what I've learnt, the 22 fret has an overhang onto the body and a deeper neck pocket is needed in order for to fit, so it doesn't sit too high (roughly between 18-22mm in depth). Not sure if the width or any other dimension has any effect though :)

Hi Stefanovic: are you sure about those measurements? A Fender neck pocket is generally 17 mm deep and the neck is 55.5 mm wide at the heel. Those dimensions stay very accurate across all models and factories of origin.

Either you've got a non-Fender neck and body or perhaps you need to take those measurements again.

Whatever: take another photo like the first one, but with the pickguard in place. I suspect the neck won't look so high then.

Hi Biff725: a 22 fret neck is exactly the same as a 21 fret neck - except with an extra fret at the high end. I'm not trying to be facetious: that's just a literal description that lets you see how the spacing of the thing works.

Fret positions are calculated as intervals along the scale length. So long as the scale length stays the same (25.5 inches on a Strat) then the positions of the frets don't change, regardless how many of them you choose to install. A 25.5" scale length Martin acoustic has fewer frets, but those that are present line up exactly with those on a Fender neck. And you could go on adding more frets towards the bridge till they became so close you couldn't play them. 24 fret necks are not uncommon and I've seen 36 fret necks - presumably for a player with very tiny fingertips.

Someone might want a 22 fret neck if a tune requires him to fret a top D note. Since the only difference is the tongue end of the fingerboard it doesn't change playability in the very slightest.

Does that help?

Cheers - C

EDITED for clarity.

No, that's not correct. See my previous post.

Thanks Ceri. I never did ask when i bought my guitar. The spacing feels fine on my 21fret neck. Very easy to play and chord. Eventually when i can afford it i want to get an EC model. Thanks for the fast reply.

More than a few times have I cursed a 22-fret neck. I don't mind the overhang, but why does it always seem that if you want a closer action, that 22nd fret is sticking up too high for it. I literally had to file that bugger in half on my Acoustasonic.
