I'm looking to remove/replace the nut on my Strat.
How does one remove a nut without butchering the neck?

Yep, it's quite easy.

Take a scalpel/kraft knife. Slice along either side of the nut to get through any lacquer. (not needed with rosewood fretboards).
Take a large flat headed screwdriver and a mallet. Place the tip of the driver against the fretboard side of the nut. Give it a gentle tap with the mallet. Do the same on the other side of the nut.

Nut should now slide out. If not, take a nail punch and tap the side of the nut.

Care and control are everything when removing a nut.

You shouldn't have to glue a properly cut nut. End of story.

I'd like to see that guy saw through a bone nut in the slot.

No offence guys, only ribbin' you !

But, wrt glue, not necessary for a strat nut. A friction-fit, as well as the tension of the strings will keep it solid.
Just google "replacing a stratocaster nut", or similar, and you will receive a wealth of information.

All is well! Using a combination of advice here and from Google, I successfully replaced my nut! It came out (literally) better than expected.
I put the finished product under another thread entitled "Ta Daaaaaah!"
But here she is again........my 1st (gasp!!) nut-job!!
A Fender 60's Reverse Special with a 2011 American Special lefty neck!
