Hello there

Does Fender, not custom shop, offer a neck with 1 3/4" nut width? Present or past models?

Anybody knows?

Thanks in advance.

They did in the past.

Vintage Stratocasters were available with one of four nut widths, with the necks ink-stamped "A", "B", "C", or "D" at the heel to differentiate them.

The dimensions were thus:

A = 1.50"
B = 1.625" (the most common size and considered to be "standard")
C = 1.75"
D = 1.875" (very rare; I've never even seen one)

I believe these optional nut widths were discontinued in the mid-70's, leaving only the "B" size.

Thanks for the reply, Retroverbial.

Anyone knows if one can buy a new or near new Fender with a 1 3/4" nut?

Short of getting something built from the Custom Shop you're out of luck; as Arjay said the old neck sizes were discontinued long ago - I know they had been discontinued for a few years by the time I started playing in '79. Since the "A", "C", and "D" necks were discontinued the widest standard neck they ever made was 1.70" wide; those were used on the 1983/84 2-knob Standards and the 1983/84 Elites.

Probably you're most cost-effective route would be to get a Strat you like and then get a replacement neck with the 1 3/4" nut width.

I had a '78 Strat with an A neck and as far as I know they were discontinued shortly after that as it was a special order.

+1

Check with Warmoth, Musikraft, or USACG -- either of them will be happy to accommodate a custom-spec order.

Hi Retroverbial: this was news to me and very interesting. Wow, that D nut would give an amazingly wide neck - you could almost string it with nylon and call it a classical Strat!

Good info. Thank you.

Cheers - C

Glad to be of help, Ceri.

I remember seeing mention of these optional nut widths in vintage catalog literature of the era. I quoted the actual dimensions as printed in Duchossoir's book.
