I can't get the plastic coating out from underneath the volume/tone controls on my mahogany HSS. I'd like to get this stuff out before it really sticks with age. The dials are installed very close to the pick guard, and I'm not sure if I should pry them off, or use a specific tool. I don't want to damage anything for some insignificant shreds of plastic.
-suggestions?

Use a shoe string. Wrap the center of the shoe string around the shaft under the control know. Pull straight up on the ends of the shoe string, then alternate pulling one end then the other. this action will pull the knob up and off. Watch it though, sometimes the knob will go shooting of and hit you in the face.

yeah, you want to get that plastic off as soon as possible. i left it on some spots on my old pickguard. bad mistake.

first off, the longer it is on, the harder it is to get off.

secondly, its surprising how much pickguards age after a few years. i had a white pickguard. after three years, it was yellowed with age. and of course, i then felt the need to get the plastic coating off. when i got it off, the spots underneath it were still white. so now I was left with an aged yellow pickguard with 3 or 4 pure white spots on it.

You know, it's funny how something so simple like using a shoestring works so well- for the longest time I would soooo carefully pry them off with a very small flat screwdriver and it took forever- Then I believe you mentioned the shoestring to someone else Chet on these forums and I had to give myself the old V8 slap!

My knobs were so close to the pickguard that they were almost touching. A shoe string would fit under it.

I took two picks and put them under the knobs and pried them up. No scratching and worked great.
