There is a certain "round" tone that a Strat produces when played through a good tube amp and the top (neck) pickup or the next notch down (out of phase) position is selected.

A perfect example of that sound, to me, is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's solo on Steely Dan's "Ricky Don't Lose That Number." It's also one of the most perfectly played solo's, along with "One of These Nights" (I'm not sure if that's a Strat or what) in pop/rock music. IMO!

Andy Summers was also ahead of his time with his tele and all that MIDI stuff he used with Police. I saw him in concert and the sounds he got from that tele were unbelievable!

Stevie Ray Vaughan on Austin City Limits, playing "You'd better leave my girl alone". To me, that is the tone that I want people to hear when I play.

I can't pick just one. I'd have to go with "Machine Gun" By Hendrix's Band Of Gypsies, Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" and SRV's versio of "Little Wing".

I have to admit you're right. Jeff gets more out of a strat then anyone I know of. His skill with a trem arm is unsurpassed.

Richie Blackmore and Yngwie are sorta the same tone but style wise very different.
I still think Clapton has My favorite strat tone

David Glimours solos on Comfortably Numb...

I prefer his work on the album, "Wish You Were Here" or his first solo album--there are other guitars on those too.

Or just go with early or late SRV or early Hendrix.
Or how about Deep Purple?

Mayer's got some pretty wild Strat tones, too. Depends on what song, though...

A lot of Gilmour mentioned here, and for good reason. How about that long slow, bluesy messing around he does in that long intro to Shine on you Crazy Diamond? Pure, pristine stratocaster tone. One of my favorite examples of emotion thru a strat.

Robin Trower displays the Strat's amazing versatility on his DVD "Living out of Time". And his blues album "Someday Blues". "Victims of the Fury" is a classic Strat + Effects album.
