I recently bought a new Music Man Axis SS guitar and after a few days realised I couldn't get comfortable with it, having grown old with strats I thought I'd look for a DeLuxe.

I asked the dealer here in the UK if he'd be interested in buying it back, basically he said it was the worst situation I could be in and that with the taxes and other problems he wasn't interested and said I would probably lose up to 40% trading it in for another guitar. That's almost $1200 for having the guitar a couply of days, is it the same everywhere?

It's like this:

If you buy a guitar with a value of $2,000, walk out the door and into another music store and sell it you will be lucky if you get $500 for it.

Let me go into a little detail here:

MSRP= $2000
Actual out the door price= $1500
Blue Book= $1000
Guitar Store Offer= $500

The store will offer you 1/2 of the blue book on it so they can make a profit on a used guitar.

pretty much what chet said.... the exception is down the road if you keep it in good shape... you may well be able to get much more than you paid for it depending on the guitar and the rarity of it down the road

If I really wanted to get rid of it I would try eBay or Craig's List

Sucks but its the same with pretty much any make. I'm taking a bath on a couple of guitars that I bought 6 months ago. I'll be lucky to get 40% of what I paid. I guess there are too many people making the same mistakes that I made...wrong choice to begin with! Lesson almost learned...take your time making a purchase. It also helps if you buy a big name brand over the long run. Look what old Fenders and Gibsons are selling for these days. Try that with an old Washburn or whatever.

What everyone here is saying is true. Anytime I took a guitar in for trade, I was lucky to get $100 - $200 for it. I took 2 guitars and a bass to a music store before moved here to NC. Needed the cash and did not have the room here for all the equipment. I sold it all to him for $375. And he threw in a case for my Epiphone Special. Ouch... but it had to be done.

There are a few, very few, shops here in the states that have trade up policies. You buy a piece of gear from them, keep it in relatively good shape, and get full purchase price on trade up to higher price gear. Very good deal for the dealer and the player.

Yeah I went into the local music store over here with an Esteve Classical Guitar that I bought for 1200 and they only offered me 400 for it. I just about cried. But thats just the way it goes.

a guy that works at the Guitar Center told me that they buy guitars for half the price that they sell them for, so by the time you buy a guitar and it instently becomes used, the guitar center figures seeing that your Guitar is used and they only paid half the price you bought it brand new for. So, now you're selling your guitar back to the Guitar Center for LESS than half of what you paid for it.

This is just another reason to play a guitar as much as possible before you buy it

That's why I order all my stuff from Musician's Friend because I can return it up to 45 days later and setup issues don' t bother me.

In the other respect, guitars are worse than cars when you drive a new one off the lot, the value takes a huge hit.

Same reason the new car you buy loses 40 percent of its value when you drive it off the lot.

The longer you play, it seems, buying and selling musical gear becomes a sort of sideline hobby in itself. Even the recording pros, I've heard, will go out and buy brand-new gear only to sell/return the stuff as soon as the studio sessions are wrapped up.

The key to making music allowable for me is to buy used instruments. Without debating the esthetics of how new-versus-aged intruments play and sound, I mainly avoid that out-the-door price drop of buying gear factory-new. In the U.S.A, quite often, buying gear, new or used, over the Internet often avoids the government sales taxes a brick-and-mortar store must include. I must add on a shipping cost for online transactions, but overall, I save money. I buy domestically to avoid duty-tax and other shipping issues. I query the seller's track record the online auctions sites often provide to get an idea of whom I'm dealing with.

I realize, once my first recording goes platinum, I'll have to return and delete this posting ..... once I get a recording contract, that is ..... once I get good enough, of course ..... Excuse me now while I leave to go practice some scales and riffs.
