I seem to like .9s. Have D'addarios on my Steinberger and just put Slinkys on my Strat. Like the sound of the Slinkys but I think I like the Ds' feel better.

What I use is bulk packs of Ernie Ball Slinkys in .10s.

When the topic of strings comes up, my mind is always drawn away into the dark mysticism of where the strings come from. It seems to be a bit of a secrecy around it all. In digging around I have found out that there are only around 3 companies that manufacture the core and wrap wire used by different retailers. One of those is a company called Mapes Piano String Company.

I recently emailed them this question: "Dear Tammy, On your website you have this page: http://www.mapeswire.com/specialtywire.html It deals with specialty wires. Are you saying your company provides the wire for all these retail companies? (Most of the big name guitar string companies. Take a look and see who is listed there!) I was told there are only a few real wire manufactures that end up selling their wire to various vendors (such as listed on your website link above) and then they cut and package the wire as “their” name brand string. Is this true?"

Here is what she wrote back to me: "Good afternoon and thank you for your inquiry regarding our products. Yes, those are customers who purchase our guitar core and wrap wire to use in the production of their products. Yes again, there are very few companies that manufacture the guitar core and wrap wire that goes into the finished string and Mapes is one of the oldest. As far as your comment that they “cut and package” the wire, that is incorrect, they manufacture their strings utilizing our core and/or wrap wire. Thank you again for your interest, if we can be of any further assistance, please let us know. Tammy Fair, Mapes Piano String Company"

Several of the "guitar string" companies buy the best wire, or grade, or types, they can get and use wire wrapping machines to make their guitar wire. Of course, one of the biggest is GHS. They have been wrapping their own strings for years. So in truth, most of these companies get their base wire from 1 of three bulk distributors. Then these companies mix varies wire and sometimes treated chemicals, to make up their own "custom" guitar strings. I always wondered how guitar strings could be made and sold by so many companies. Now i know. And some, I am sure, are really the same wire as others, with different packaging and ferrules on the ends. Then others are very unique. Now to figure out which is which! (not that it matters!)

Jeff: That pretty much ties in with what I related earlier on about the comments the EB rep gave me over the phone. Didn't seem that he could draw much difference between his product and D'Addario's.

Why does everyone like Ernie Ball strings? Because they're cheap?

I find that they are not only reasonably priced, but their quality of the string wire used is good. I pop on a set, stretch them, and then tune. I might have one more tuning after that and they are ready to play. I use to use Dean Markley Blue Steel, very good strings as well but they had a problem with the ferrule on the .10 string breaking off. I emailed the company after having about 3 sets ruined due to this. the V Pres of marketing called me personally and asked if I could send him a sample, which I did. A few days later I receive a box with 20 sets of strings—for free. Now that is enough to keep you as a customer. BUT the Ernie Ball strings in bulk are cheaper so i got into buying them that way. I WAS impressed with Dean Markley's customer support!!!!

nope, because they work and last.
i dont care about the price of them. its like gasoline,
ya might biotch about the cost's but you will buy it
anyways no matter what the price goes up to. you need it and thats that.
same with ernie strings, i need them.
ive used ernie and D'Addario's for decades. i honestly have
mixed these up so much, i cant tell you the differences between
the two. i just grab a pack and restring.
