Anyone know if the SRV strat and the 62 vintage hot rod have the same neck? The SRV strat is labeled as having an "Oval" neck...not sure what that is...elliptical? The 62 vintage hot rod reissue is labeled as having a large C.

It would be great if Fender put out some sectional views of all the necks they make because they are a ton of variants of each of the shapes they have. A true size sectional chart would be awesome...something you could print out and get a better idea.

check out this chart http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Necks/BackContours.aspx
they are not the same neck
SRV is 12" radius, HR is 9.5
think of the SRV as an off-set V-neck, when I play with my thumb over the neck, the fat part of the neck fits right into the meat of the palm under? the thumb. If I play the HR the same way it pretty much fills the whole palm. It's much thicker, but still comfortable to play, and still not as big as the early Jeff Becks.

some other things to consider:
the SRV has a polyurethane finish
the HR is thin skin nitro with a satin finish neck, tone two works the bridge pup.
I find the SRV etched into the pick guard gets very annoying, seems like it's always grabbing my finger nails.

The neck on my '92 SRV feels small compared to the monsters on the '62 HR.

It's pretty easy to change out the pickguard.

Thanks for the link for that neck chart. I tried them both. True, the hot rod feels bigger. I think its the profile. I prefer the SRV neck.

That is interesting, when did you try both? My experience from 2009/2010 models was the opposite (feel wise, I did not measure). The SRV was felt thicker sort of U shaped vs thick C on the 62 VHR. Definitely not the same feel on the back of the neck. I did not feel any difference between 9.5 and 12 fingerboard radius.

I tried them a couple of weeks ago. I'm still on the edge of which one to get, but with the SRV neck I could get my thumb comfortably over the top. With the 62 it wasn't as easy. I'm going to take another run at them both the next chance I can get to a GC. Actually, I want them both. :D

But it's a good thing that you can identify the finer points of each guitar going in to play them. Although there is no wrong choice, I am confident you will make the right one 8)

Yeah, I have thought of changing it, but then it wouldn't be an SRV anymore, to me anyway.

I changed mine out within weeks of getting it.Its still a SRV. I didnt buy it because its an "SRV" , but because it has the features I want and one of the nicest necks.

I changed the pickguard on mine after a couple of years. I wanted a more vintage look so I swapped it for a mint green '62 pickguard.
