Has anybody tried this pickup in his strat? I am planning to install this one on my mexican strat, but wanted your feedback as to how the sound will change.
I am looking for more drive and punch than that of my texas special bridge pickup.

It will be quite midrange heavy with less high end than your Texas Special. Volume and bass wise, it will be about the same. Of course, the DiMarzio will be humbucking.

I'm using this for my bridge pickup. I love it. It gives you a nice thick bride sound. I think it would be too bassy for any other position.

thanks for the replies.
What would you suggest for the neck position? I need a higher gain PU than the TS :?:

I have an Area 67 in the neck and a Area 61 in the middle.
I used this strat for the sound samples on www.tonebrick.com
A couple are done with the beige pickup on its own
My primary amp is a Blues JR.

As from last night, I have to say I am in love with the tone i get from the DP 409 I just installed.

It sounds thick and creamy, while retaining the straty sound, with lots of clarity whether in clean or in drive channel!

In combination with the Boss CS3, the sound is heavenly... I recommend this upgrade to anyone looking for a medium to high gain out of his strat. Suitable for rock and blues, while in the 2nd position (middle&bridge) it sounds like a strat should, clean and acoustic, as long as it is not positioned too high near the strings. It has no string pull whatsoever, the height adjustment is only a matter of taste. The closer to the strings, the more aggresive it gets, the further away, the more acoustic.

Thought I had to share this with all you folks!

Glad to hear it worked out!

The DiMarzio DP-series seldom disappoint. And they're noiseless as well (big consideration for me). I liked them so much I set two Strats up with them -- Virtual Vintage Solo Pro in the bridge, Area 58 for the middle, Area 61 at the neck. They're awesome!

to be honest with you, I am going to evaluate the possible change of the neck TS with an Area 61... Too bad I cant find clean sound videos on youtube, and all the samples on DiMarzio's site are overdriven. If there is too much of a dynamic response between bridge and neck - while playing with the band today - I will surely have to do the swap.
Any clean sounds from area 61 are welcome...!

I'm glad this is working out and that you had the same reaction to them I had. They were THE sound I was looking for in the bridge.
The Area 61 is in the TS ballpark tone wise so that would probably be a good swap.
All the pickups in my strat are the "Area/VV" type and it's just amazing how quiet it is while still sounding completely singlecoilish. I know people often say they don't mind the hum, but it gives you a lot more dynamic range to play with when it's gone.

+1

I haven't used the Area 67 pickup yet so I cannot comment but the Area 61 is very "simpatico" with either clean or overdriven tones. Rolling the tone control off with heavy overdrive and some compression yields a fabulous "woman tone". When used in conjunction with the middle pickup and the amp set for moderate crunch it's as spanky-sounding as they come.

HTH
