I'm looking to buy my husband his dream guitar, which is an American made strat, red satin body with maple neck and black pickguard. I understand that they don't make this one presently. Any ideas beyond Ebay and Kijiji where I can find one? I live in the bush in northern Canada and don't have major centres to shop in.

Hi Naz

I know this isn't American made, but it has the right colour and plate.

It's in the current catalogue. Could be a option?

Thanks for the suggestion, but the current one is a candy red and has a rosewood fretboard. He wants the older one which is American made and had a maple fretboard. Are there good places to look for used strats?

Red satin?

It sounds like you need to be looking for a Highway One model, as I believe those are the only American made models that are available in satin (the rest come in high gloss). If you can't find one with a black pickguard, buy one and have the shop install it for you (or give him the guitar and parts and tell him it's a kit).

I have a satin red Highway One Strat with maple neck, though it has a white pickguard. Its a great guitar and you can probably find one used for pretty cheap - at a music store that offers affordable shipping. Just do some digging and google searches.

Hi nazkoplayer, welcome to the Forum.

Wives who are sympathetic to their husband's guitar needs are very popular round here - with me at any rate! So we need to help as much as we can.

I stand to be corrected but I don't remember a satin red Strat with a black pickguard in the catalog any time recently. However, if he could put up with a white pickguard and a humbucking pickup in the bridge position here is a brand new one for sale:

http://cgi.ebay.com/FENDER-STRATOCASTER ... 2a10271339

Obviously, the white pickguard and the pickup can be swapped out easily enough if he really doesn't like them. More problematically, that guitar also has a rosewood fingerboard on its maple neck: I perfectly understand if that is not what Mr Nazkoplayer's heart desires.

So in that case here is a used 2003 Highway One, red with a maple fingerboard and single coil pickups. Pretty good condition, though some scratching on the back of the body:

An alternative from the current catalog would be a Candy Apple Red American Special Strat. Again, the white pickguard could be swapped easily, but of course the red is not satin - Candy Red only comes in gloss:

Does that get you any further down the road?

If not, let us know. We love searching for guitars!

Good luck - C

Hi ralfcaetano: last Valentine's Day my wife gave me a heavy sterling silver plectrum with the words "I pick you" engraved upon it.

I can't go into a guitar shop with her without that she stands there saying; "Is that one good enough? Wouldn't a more expensive one be better? Wouldn't two or three guitars be nice? Ooo, look at this Martin, isn't it pretty? Buy it." Etc. Neat.

One time I was bidding on a very nice and rare orchestral snare drum on Ebay. I set myself a limit and when it was exceeded in the last couple of minutes of the auction I was very sensible and didn't bid higher. Then I kicked myself for days afterwards because I only missed it by a few bucks. Cut to Christmas about four months later: a nice big package under the tree which turned out to be... the self same snare drum. I'd been outbid by my own wife under an assumed name.

There's much, much better stories about Mrs C, but that'll do to be getting on with.

God bless wives indeed! 8)

Cheers - C

It's the best reason. Actually, any reason is the best reason.

Sounds to me like senhorita ralfcaetano is a keeper. Look after that girl and she'll look after you! 8)

Every morning when I get up my wife tells me to" go buy a bass, a Fender Jazz or P bass.'" While you're at it get an amp too", she says. "Can you please get maybe a Jaco relic?" "How about an Ampeg SVT or a Markbass with a 4-10 cabinet?". "Don't you just love the new P bass that just came out?" "Me too". Yeah, I have to love her. Of course we all know I"M STINKING LIEING!!!!!!
A wife encouraging the husband to get more guitars? You must live on Planet Bizzarro. More power to you friend.

oh come on stroker wives are pretty amazing... lol plus my girlfriend only wanted the custom shop cause she didn't know the price she just loves blue and she's crazy for lake placid blue so she just gave her opinion... she got mad cause she thought the custom shop looked cooler and so did i but i got no cash... wives are pretty suportive in my opinion when it comes to what we like sure we can't buy a guitar or bass every morning but when we do buy one they are pretty suportive and help us out the most possible for us to own a special guitar... i think my girlfriend has become a pick collector too cause she always notices when i don't have one...
