Okay, I have a CBS 1979 Fender Strat with the 3 bolt micro-tilt adjument neck. The guitar is in great shape and I've had it since the late 80's. It used to be my main guitar back in the day and saw a lot of rehersals/gigs. So the last time I took her in for a good going over they told me the frets have likely, one more dressing in them before needing to refret the neck. Because of this I have not been playing her much the last year or so but I really want to.

So, I want to get another neck to put on this body and store the original.

My question is: do I have to put another neck with the micro-tilt on it or can I use any neck that will fit the neck pocket? There are plenty of reissue necks out there with the micro-tilt but generally run $300 + and for around that price I can just get the existing neck refretted. Also, my neck is maple fretboard and I'd like to get a rosewood one.

I have seen some mighty mite necks and such but I'm wondering do I have to have the micro-tilt or can I use the existing 3 bolt neck plate on a typical neck?

I appreciate any info the forum may have.

Thanks,

I would just get the neck refretted. If you get a different neck you will regret it.

not so much. if money is the issue of the refret, and we have went over the possibilities, then a warmoth neck will do him rather nicely. their vintage necks are a dream to play.
yes it would be 3/4 of the worst case fret job price but it will keep him playing until hes ready to refret. i want one of these guitars bad. one of the most beautiful guitars ive ever laid eyes on belongs to our good friend cedar down in FL. that 79 hes got has all but cause wet dreams on this end. its original and as plain jane as you can get.
i will have one one day. thing is, the op's 79 isnt original. its got history with it too.
far from a collectors guitar but would be tops on my list if it were mine. he can afford to buy a new neck for the time being given the case i just stated, then refret at a later date and still be one up with a sweet neck to build a 79 copy with and as a project, restore the real 79 as he goes along should he choose to do so.
either way it will be very interesting to see what hes gonna do here. options options options. :D

I think for the time being I will do as Steve-oh suggested and just play it till it won't play no more but simultaneously be looking for a neck.

That Warmouth idea is also very interesting........

I would also just get it refretted. In fact, I have had vintage guitars refretted so that I could play them.

The "different neck" idea (like a Warmoth) is a good idea, afterall, the OP isn't going to junk or sell the original neck ...

It's all up to him. It's his money. I don't think he's asking us to spend it for him.

you are correct, but one has to expect this when they ask for advice,
and he has gotten some good advice with many options. :D

Exactly. It seems he ought to do more research, however, and not here. He needs to find a good local luthier for a quote on refretting. He needs to visit Warmoth to see what they offer. Then he should come back and tell us what he's decided.

I can't figure out why some people seem to want us to think for them.

i dont think thats the case here at all. i think he was just seeking advice and maybe looking for options he hadnt thought of at this point.
i do the same thing when it gets down to the bare wire too.
i seek advice, see if there is anything to pop up that didnt cross my mind, then i bounce a few ideas off the forum. after that i take everything in, think it over again, then i make my move. sometimes we all take different routes to reach our conclusions.
the original question was about micro tilt on a replacement neck, and was answered on page 1. through dicussion, questions to the OP, and comments, we reached this far.

Thanks Way Cool,
Your exactly right, my post was not looking for someone to "think" for me. Nor disparage any particular neck brand choice or whatever else. I understand these things often take on a life of their own and go where they will.
Nevertheless, the post was intended simply to ask can a non micro-tilt neck be usuably mounted on a 3-bolt body. Maybe I should have spared eveyone the background and just asked the question.

At any rate, there have been several good ideas come forward. In the case of Warmoth, I was aware of them previously, yet they didn't come to mind at the time. At your mention I did play around on their site and that is a great option. For near the cost of a similar replacement RI neck I could pick what features I'd prefer to have from materials to radius, nut size etc. so that is pretty cool. and they offer 3-bolt micro-tilt routing! :D

It is not really imperative to me that the guitar stay "all Fender" as long as the neck fits correctly and feels/plays good then i'll be happy.

Rock on!

For what it's worth, there's a Classic Series 70 just up on eBay w/ a rosewood neck. . .

You should be able to part it out and end up with a lower priced neck than Warmoth.
