I have a 1988 American Standard that I'm trying to restore to the factory setup before I make my own adjustments. I've noticed that the tremolo claw has been screwed into the body further than I've seen on many others. Does anyone know what the specified distance was between the claw and the edge of the body when these came from the factory?

That distance depends on 1) the gauge of strings you use, 2) the number of springs you use, 3) how you tune the guitar (standard tuning vs some alternative), and 4) how high off the body you want the bridge to float.

The factory set distance may no longer be relevant.

This is all true, but I still imagine that they came from the factory with the same settings. That's what I'm looking to find out. I'll do the adjustments from there.

Hey unionave,
I found the factory trem specs you were asking about.

In the '70s, the spec can be seen here:

http://www.fender.com/support/manuals/pdfs/instr_owners/Stratocaster_1970s.pdf

3/16" between the trem block and the body wall (the gap that's completely opposite the one you indicate in your image).

Currently, the spec can be seen here:

http://www.fender.com/support/manuals/pdfs/instr_owners/FenderGuitarsAndBasses2003.pdf

1/8" gap between the rear of the bridge plate and the top of the body.

Take your pick!

Good Luck

I think those specifications are talking about the amount of play between the bridge and the body when you setup the tremolo to "float." Those are measured on the outside of the body. The one I'm looking for is under the tremolo cover and it doesn't seem to be posted anywhere on the Fender site. Thank you for looking.

Not exactly. The 1/8" spec is on the outside of the body, between the bridge plate and body. But the "old" 3/16" spec is under the tremolo cover. Please click on this link:

http://www.fender.com/support/manuals/pdfs/instr_owners/Stratocaster_1970s.pdf

and go to the 5th page of the pdf file and you will see what I believe was Fender's only spec "under the tremolo cover."
