I been reading this forum for sometime now researching if a vintage tremelo bridge and vintage tuners would fit on an Am Stnd.

I just did the change last night and I wanted to share the following for anyone else who may want to do this.

I used the Callaham Retrofit Kit for Am Stnd to install the (6 screw) vintage bridge. Although Callaham strongly forewarns that "a change in the fret bevel" is needed, it seems fine to me so far. The kit installed easily and perfectly. Drilling the 4 inner screw holes was easy, but I was a little nervous at first.

The difference in the tremolo block is that the vintage has no taper, so I've gained some mass here.

The vintage (Gotoh Kluson style) tuners were a bit more difficult because the hole size on an Am Stnd is 3/8" - 13/32". The vintage requires a 11/32" hole. Don't laugh, but I wrapped some masking tape around the bushings (trimmed it) to fit. It's working so far. I saw on a website that a 13/32" conversion bushing is available - I maybe order that.

Overall, the conversion went well. I just need to patch the string tree holes from the Am Stnd trees (I have a '91 that came with 2 string trees) and do a set up.

Thanks to all for your previous advice and help.

Try lining your tuner bushing holes with strips of brass or copper shim stock -- say, of .008" thickness. It will hold those bushings more permanently.

Probably.

The Kluson set installs with seven screws arranged thus......

Be sure to use a depth gauge when drilling any holes in a headstock.

Here is a link to some pics. I hope this works. You might have to copy and paste into a browser.

Also to reply to the question on having to drill holes to install the tuners - yes, I had to drill 7 small holes to mount the tuners. Aligning the tuners was the hardest part. I am going to try to re-mount using the posted suggestion as long as I can find that shim stock. I never heard of that.

You can find shim stock at most Lowe's, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware stores.

If I were going to do a converstion to a ventage Strat I would take a black HWY1 and vintage '50s neck, Some custom shop '54 pickups and buff the body real nice.

The Floyd Rose Special models were equipped with vintage Kluson tuners.
